Who doesn’t love the ‘80s?
Whether you lived in them or after them, the ‘80s had some pinnacle fashion and music.
Hair bands were all the rage and the music still stands to this day as a classic.
American Idol has seen many singers tackle music from the ‘70s, ‘80s. ‘90s, and now. Some singers can nail a decade’s sound flawlessly and others can sound gimmicky.
When it comes to Catie Turner, there is no gimmick. She has all the flare of an ‘80s singer, but still, manages to maintain her own personality and style.
Catie made it to the Top 24 on season 16 of American Idol and for her solo performance this week, she went back in time. But don’t let the neon pink go-go boots fool you, she picked a song from the ‘80s.
She chose “Call Me’ which was released by the rock band Blondie in 1980.
She wasn’t sure what to sing for her solo shot, so she asked her dad what he thought. He was quick to tell her to sing “Call Me” – multiple times!
And Catie had to let her dad win when it came to the song selection! It is a good thing she listened to her father because he made a great call.
It was the perfect song for Catie’s sound. She moved around the stage like she owned it.
There was so many hair flips, every ‘80s one-hit wonder would be so proud!
After she was done, Luke Bryan was the first judge to weigh in on Catie’s performance. He had nothing but positive feedback after her lively rendition of the ‘80s hit.
“I’ll tell you what, I couldn’t quit watching you. That’s the main thing, we’re trying to find people that when they walk out, you’re like, ‘oh my god, what’s she going to do next?’
So, you’re quirky and crazy Catie, but we love you. Your voice is always there and it never lets us down!”
After seeing Katy Perry’s reaction, it should come as no surprise that her feedback was positive.
She loved Catie’s song choice, as she found it fun and entertaining. Catie’s presence really struck a chord with Katy.
“I just love your whole package. I love who you are. Never change!”
Mr. Lionel Richie was too excited to talk about Catie’s personality while she performed. In particular, he really felt she had nailed the hair flip perfectly and it made her stand out.
To which, Katy Perry agreed and said that you only really learn how to flip your hair in Hollywood.
“You were something special when we first saw you. Now, you’ve taken your style and made us believers in your style.
There’s a word called personality that goes along with celebrity, that goes along with a hit record, that goes along with a career.”
