As soon as she walked into the audition room, 17-year-old Catie Turner made an impression on the American Idol judges.
She wore a light pink dress paired with white gogo boots and a brown sailor cap.
But her outfit wasn’t the most interesting part of this audition!
She even had something in common with judge Katy Perry! When Katy asked what her name was, Catie responded with:
“Catie with a C and you’re Katy with a K and I already think this friendship is off to a great start!”
A sign that Catie should obviously move on to the next round, right?
When Katy asked her to push her hat back a little, so the judges could see her face better, she actually took it off and tossed it on the ground. Then Katy said they could toss money inside!
It probably was for the best, because Catie knows how to work her long hair into her performance!
Catie decided to perform an original song for the judges and told them that she’d be singing, “21st Century Machine.”
When Katy asked her what the song would be about, Catie gave a little insight into it.
“It kind of is about how media affected me as an impressionable young child and kind of my bitterness to it.”
Even though she only sang a few bars, the judges were instantly hooked on Catie’s original tune. Katy told the teenager:
“You’re a spectacular songwriter. I love where you mind’s at.”
She then prompted the other judges to give their own feedback as well.
Luke Bryan agreed with Katy’s sentiment and felt that Catie is interesting and brilliant beyond her years.
Lionel Richie had an interesting compliment to dole out to the young singer.
“I love the sound of your voice. Every once in a while, a martian lands and we happen to see the martian. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to see you. I am just fascinated with your brain. Your writing is crazy great.”
The judges then had to put things to a vote to determine whether or not Catie would move on past the audition stage of this competition.
Of course, after all of those positive comments, the three judges said yes to Catie!
Luke Bryan did have a warning for her. He didn’t want her to ever use her phone or computer to read what people might say about her online.
“I don’t want the outside world to mess with your beautiful brain.”
