If you haven’t watched the banter and song between rock legend Rod Stewart and Late Late Show host James Corden, you really are missing out.
As the two cruise around L.A., Corden begins by belting out the 1976 hit “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” which he really rocks out to. But Stewart is a bit more mellow.
He gets more animated when his host asks him some questions about his debaucherous days of rock stardom.
When asked to share his “most rock and roll moment,” Stewart tries and fails to think of just one. But it sounds like his days with one of his early bands, Faces, held the most stories.
There’s been so many,” he said. “We were outrageous with the Faces. Just drinkin’ and a shaggin’ and a drinkin’ and a shaggin’! That’s what we did – and smashing up hotel rooms. . . In those days, the only bands who were [throwing TVs out hotel windows] were the Faces and the Who. It actually came around because we weren’t getting the respect we deserved. We paid for hotel rooms; we didn’t get room service or anything. We just didn’t get any respect.”
Apparently, neither did the hotel furniture!
But the funniest part?
“As the Faces, we were banned from all Holiday Inns, so we used to check in as Fleetwood Mac,” Stewart admitted.
After some proper headbanging moments, the duo launch into a more modern song that features a sample of Stewart’s vocals from “In a Broken Dream.” It’s A$AP Rocky’s “Everyday,” and they both know all the words.
Then the epic moment happens.
Like no big deal, A$AP Rocky himself pops right into the backseat like it’s the most normal thing in the world, and busts out a verse.
And just as quickly, he pops back out.
“He’s a lovely bloke, too, isn’t he?” Stewart quips once he’s gone.
“I don’t know — I’ve never met him,” Corden jokes.
It was the perfect cameo since it didn’t take anything away from Stewart’s guest spot but reminded us all that he’s still earning the respect of musicians in every genre.
Of course, you can’t have Rod Stewart hang out in your car without getting him to duet with you to “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?”
And we couldn’t help but laugh at the moment when it appears a passenger from another car does a double-take and realizes who’s next to him.
The guy yells “That’s Rod Stewart! God bless you, Rod Stewart!”
Stewart then shares who was the inspiration for the song “Maggie May,” the two finish off their set with “Ooh La La” by Faces.
“Best carpool EVER! ROD STEWART IS A LEGEND!” said a commenter.
It was an awesome moment!
