One thing Canada is known for, is the incredible winter athletes that compete for the country in national competitions. From hockey, to snowboarding and ice skating, they country brings some tough competitors to any sport. This ice dancing duo is a fan favorite and melts hearts every time they perform.
The announcer introduces them as ‘ultimate role models’ and the crowd goes wild. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are Canada’s ice dance champions, and based on the routine you’re about to watch, it’s pretty clear why. “Our next skaters exude class, positive energy and enthusiasm. They simply bring it. Every time they step on the ice.”
The pair makes their way onto the ice as the announcer introduces them, and they look as focused as ever. As their eyes meet, it’s almost as though they’re communication without words, something they’ve probably mastered since they have ben skating with each other for so long.
A slow song begins to play, and instantly the lyrics are recognizable. Though it’s not the original song by the Beatles, its a stripped down version of the tender song “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and it fills the arena with emotion. Everyone in the crowd can feel it and they haven’t even done their most impressive tricks yet.
As if the performance wasn’t moving enough, the pairing of this particular song to the intimate performance of these two skaters makes a show you can’t take your eyes off of. The way they glide across the ice, hold one another, and move in sync is mesmerizing.
Their routine starts out somewhat simple, but slowly gains momentum as the song builds. They go from what looks like slow dancing in ice skates to impressive turns and spins. Just before the end of the routine is when they really show off their skills and chemistry. Moir lifts and swings Virtue around him so effortlessly its as if she weighs nothing and the crowd loves every second of it.
Despite their clear chemistry the ice dancing duo is not a couple. Though they have gained the nickname ‘Canada’s Sweethearts’ the two are not dating or married, no matter how badly their fans want them to be.
The pair has been dancing for 22 years together and has set records and won more medals than any other ice dancer in history. Their trophies include gold medals at the Vancouver Olympic Games, silver in the Sochi Olympic Games, and gold again in the Pyeongchang Olympic Games in 2018.
Though Virtue and Moir have clear talent ,the pair has recently retired from skating and has set the bar high for the future of Canadian skaters.
