Without a doubt, there have been plenty of inspiring performances on America’s Got Talent over the years.
Though plenty of people try out of the show, it takes a certain special something to really stand out. Sometimes a person is so incredibly talented that it’s their voice or performance that shines the brightest.
In other cases, it’s the person’s personality or the unique song that they chose. Though it takes a little bit of everything at once, it can also help to have a powerful backstory to underscore your talent.
That was the case with one contestant on the show’s 2016 season.
The performer we’re talking about is 16-year-old Calysta Bevier.
Like any other audition, she begins by walking out onstage to introduce herself to the judges. She tells them that she’s from a small town called Grand Rapids in Ohio.
Although she seems very confident and self-assured, she’s still only 16 years old! She says that she doesn’t compare herself to anyone and hopes to prove that she’s an original voice. After that, she says that her hair wasn’t her choice.
Instead, it was the result of a gradual recovery from cancer.
As she explains, the doctors told her that she had stage three ovarian cancer.
Needless to say, that’s a pretty severe diagnosis for anybody, let alone someone as young as Bevier. Before long, she started on chemo to fight the disease and noticed that her hair was beginning to fall out as well.
She said that she cried the most that day because it was so strange. Still, Bevier stayed as positive as she possibly could and listened to a ton of music. Finally, she pulled through and went into remission!
After her recovery, Bevier says that she was ready to take her singing career more seriously.
Finally, she tells everyone that they should keep chasing their dreams no matter what they’ve been through.
At last, the background music starts to play for Rachel Platten’s song “Fight Song.” Before long, she’s singing soulfully along with the inspiring lyrics—and she really soars over the high notes!
Even though she’s so young, Bevier still has masterful control of her voice and her own unique delivery. As the song winds to a close, she slows her delivery down to really hammer the message home.
When it’s all over, the crowd gives her a standing ovation!
When it was time for the judges to give her feedback, everyone was so impressed!
All the comments were so positive… and judge Simon Cowell saves the best for last. He says that he loves everything about her from her look to her voice to her spirit.
He also says that right when she walked out onstage, he knew that there was something special about Bevier—something that America is probably going to see more and more of in the future. When it was all over, Cowell didn’t even call for a vote—he hit the Golden Buzzer!
At that, everyone goes wild!
When it’s finally over, Cowell hugs her family and everyone celebrates.
Though it goes without saying, Bevier’s performance was so inspiring and combined everything that a great audition ought to have. She had the talent, the poise and the inspiring story and motivations. Above all, it’s clear that Bevier is going to keep inspiring the world for years to come!
