Although we often think of pop reality shows as just being another casual form of entertainment, for some artists they mean much more.
Just because every seasons of American Idol only has one winner, that doesn’t mean that all the other contestants don’t benefit from the show’s exposure, or that they don’t go on to their own successful singing careers. As just one example, hugely popular band One Direction all started separately by auditioning on The X Factor before being packaged together as a group.
Another example who some people may not have heard of is English singer-songwriter Calum Scott.
Today, Scott is a recording artist with a handful of his own singles and hit songs.
Still, like many other artists before him, Scott began his musical journey by auditioning for the judges on Britain’s Got Talent. As it turns out, Scott was auditioning on the show along with his sister Jade, who went out to audition before him.
As she went out, though, Simon Cowell stopped her early in the song—which then lead to her getting three nos and being swiftly eliminated from the competition!
Needless to say, that’s not the easiest lead-in to have when you’re auditioning next!
Despite his nerves, Scott walks out on the stage and stands tall in front of the judges.
As he explains to the judges, he is 26 years old and will be singing his own unique cover of “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn. While the original version is very dance-y and fun, Scott’s version is slowed down and a bit more introspective. After they hear his introduction, the judges clear the way for him to perform.
After taking a deep breath, the piano accompaniment begins and he starts.
Even though his sister didn’t fare well with the judges, Scott’s voice for his own song starts off quite strong.
Though the song is slow, his deep and soulful voice has the whole crowd rapt from the very beginning.
As the judges always say, choosing the right song for an audition is often just as important as actually having stage presence and singing talent—in this case, it’s absolutely clear just how true that is! Scott’s choice of song is the perfect showcase for his amazing voice and his unique artistic sensibility.
By the end of it, Scott lets his voice his soar and the crowd roars with applause.
As the camera pans out into the audience, many members of the crowds seem to be holding back tears.
At the end of it all, Scott breathes a sigh of relief and the crowd gives him a standing ovation.
After that, before anybody can say anything at all, Simon reaches over and smashes the Golden Buzzer! As the confetti rains down, Scott’s sister Jade runs out onstage to give him a hug! At the end of it all, Simon says a few words about what everyone just saw:
“I’ve never ever in all the years I’ve done this show heard a guy with the talent you’ve got. Seriously. And the version was sensational, and that shows to me that you’re more than a singer, you’re an artist and that’s why you got [the Golden Buzzer.]”
Needless to say, Scott’s performance on the show helped catapult him to higher levels of stardom!
After getting a record deal, Scott’s first single was a recorded version of his unique “Dancing On My Own” cover. Although shows like this may just be a passing entertainment for most of us, for artists like Scott, they can truly be life-changing. While we’ve seen plenty of great auditions on shows like this over the years, this one is truly one to remember!
Congratulations to Calum on a successful audition and on a burgeoning music career! Watch the amazing performance below:
