BYU Vocal Point has covered a variety of classics from “You Raise Me Up” to popular movie tunes. Members of the 2016-2017 ensemble were the ones who recorded a heart-stirring version of “It Is Well with My Soul.”

The video is full of beauty from beginning to end and is done (of course) in a cappella style. It begins with one singer, but soon the other vocalists join him, taking seats on empty stools.

While surrounded by glowing lights, the singers blend their talents together and produce a sound that’s heavenly.

On Vocal Point’s Facebook page they share:

“Under the direction of McKay Crockett, Vocal Point’s nine-man vocal firepower propels harmonies far beyond traditional four-part possibilities.”

“It Is Well with My Soul” was written by Horatio Spafford back in 1873. Sadly, the story behind it is full of sorrow.

Spafford was an accomplished lawyer, church elder, husband, and father. During his life, he experienced a string of tragedies that led him to pen the tune about faith in the Lord. According to The St. Augustine Record, Spafford’s son passed in 1871 and shortly after, he experienced financial devastation because of the Great Chicago Fire.

Then in 1873, there was yet another horrible tragedy. All four of Spafford’s daughters were aboard an ocean liner with their mother when it collided with another ship and sank. The four girls drowned, yet his wife managed to survive. It was while traveling over the same waters to meet his wife after the accident that Spafford wrote the comforting hymn.
