Consider yourself extremely lucky if you are just on the street corner, and you suddenly meet somebody famous.
You’d be very grateful for that day, especially when he’s the one who comes to you even for just a short collaboration.
A busker was out in a corner singing “Smalltown Boy,” a popular song by the Bronski Beat. He was standing by the wall with a blue acoustic guitar in his arms. He placed his hat on the ground to receive money from generous spectators of his performance.
In the clip, the busker was singing the chorus when he was suddenly interrupted by a man walking his dog.
Before continuing, he said:
“Oh wait… one, two, three!”
The man who came up to him sang along, and the busker continued playing his instrument.
The latter was happy to be noticed as he was singing…
“Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away”
The man even rested his head on his arm while he continually strummed his guitar as a few spectators were recording their short gig on their smartphones.
It was the original singer of the song who went close to him, James William Somerville of Bronski Beat himself.
The Bronski Beat was a synthpop trio from London and was very popular in the mid-1980s. The song “Smalltown Boy” was listed in the US Billboard Hot 100 single.
Being music lovers, it was an incredible moment for them. Their voices blended so well to sing a duet.
Jimmy Somerville went up to the guy with a humble attitude. He never showed any hint of arrogance while he sang with the ordinary guy. He was just out there to have some fun while holding his dog’s leash to keep his pet in place as he performed with the busker.
The busker must have never thought that he’d be able to meet the original singer in person, in a very casual way and be complimented “well-done” for his performance.
After singing the song, the busker asked:
“Is it you?”
Jimmy answered,
“It’s a hit. It’s me.”
Somerville just gave a laugh in confirmation. The busker could not believe his eyes. A famous musician was right beside him, helping him sing his own song. The busker felt surprised, and he couldn’t hide feeling overwhelmed after reality sank in that it really is Somerville.
For sure, he won’t forget that unexpected occurrence in his life.
What a priceless moment this is, especially for an ordinary musician out in the street just showcasing his passion and talent.
Being a simple guy who walks out his dog, Jimmy must have done this a few times with other buskers, and this guy right here is one fortunate man to be on the list. We just love how Jimmy spends time and notices musicians like him.
It would be great to see and hear Somerville perform an unplugged acoustic version of their hit song “Smalltown Boy” like what he did in this clip.
For now, let’s watch his incredible duet with a busker, which now has more than 11.6 million views on YouTube.
