Without a doubt, making a living as a street performer is a tough gig.
If you live in a big city, you’re liable to see street performers on the busier corners or on subway platforms.
Although many of them are quite talented, it’s also pretty easy to tune them out after a while—after all, people who live in the city are busy and need to get where they’re going. As such, buskers need to have something particularly unique or compelling about them to truly stand out.
Fortunately, the performer in this video found a way to do just that.
The person we’re talking about goes by the stage name Anders Flanderz One Man Band.
Although he may not be a household name, Anders Flanderz One Man Band has made a name for himself through his spontaneous street performances and the YouTube videos resulting from them.
For those who don’t know, Anders Flanderz is a Swedish street performer who lives up to his name by carrying an entire band’s worth of instruments on his back. In his performances, he plays all the different parts of each song for truly unique shows that capture the audience’s imagination.
And this video is just one great example.
The clip we’re talking about today was posted online in January 2018.
As it begins, the camera pans to Flanderz on the street corner as a loud bus passes by. Sure enough, he is decked out with a helmet, an accordion, a cymbal on his head and a strange boa around his neck.
After waiting for the bus to pass, he starts into a rousing performance of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper. Although the original performance is slower and led by a synth-section, this one is an upbeat polka song with a stomping rhythm and a vocoder.
Although it sounds strange, the performance quickly attracts a dancing crowd!
By the time he gets through the first chorus, he’s hitting the cymbal and the entire crowd is dancing around him!
Although the music is a bit strange, there’s no denying that Flanderz has plenty of talent to play so many different instruments at the same time while dancing around, singing and entertaining the whole crowd.
Before long, more and more people are joining in and people are dropping money in his hat. For his part, this first clip earned more than a million views on YouTube.
Even so, this isn’t the only viral performance he’s posted online.
As it turns out, Flanderz has a YouTube channel with nearly 29,000 subscribers!
In another popular video, he brings his skills to an even larger crowd. After using some gaffer tape to fix up his instruments, he starts into a polka version of the Ghostbusters theme song—which is just as bizarre as it sounds!
Even so, he pulls it off with just as much panache as the first one. And in this one, he even gets the crowd to join singing the call and response.
Needless to say, Flanderz is a fearless performer.
Although it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s still inspiring to see people going this far out of their comfort zone.
As it turns out, Flanderz is definitely making a name for himself online. No matter how far and wide tihs music spreads, there’s something incredible about Flanderz’s unique musical style and his contagious energy. If you live in a major city, keep your eyes peeled for him!
