Are you a fan of Bruno Mars?
Regardless of who you are, chances are there’s at least one of his songs out there that you like.
For anybody who might not know, Mars is a singer, songwriter, producer and dancer who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and who creates pop music that includes many different genres—genres such as soul, pop, reggae, hip hop and rock. For the most part, Mars is known for his huge stage shows and his glitzy and polished outward appearance and persona.
Still, there’s another side to this artist that not as many people know about.
While it’s easy to love a well-produced pop song, we sometimes wonder just how talented the artists are behind the all the production.
Fortunately, there are ways to find out the answers to these questions—all you have to do is see these artists live or in a smaller venue!
While not everybody will be up for the challenge, Bruno Mars definitely was… and it paid off hugely. The performance we’re talking about was set up by Billboard and was taped at Mophonics Studio NY in New York City in 2010.
It was from earlier in Mars’s career and showcases just how talented he is.
The song he chose to perform was “Grenade” off of his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans.
Although the original version of his song is more of an up-tempo, stomping and angry song, in his performance here Mars turns it into a slower acoustic song that showcases all the pain of the lyrics.
Fortunately, even with all the additional production and styling pulled back from the recording, Mars’s voice is just as accurate and soulful as it is on the recorded version.
Though he does a great job in the first half of the song, things really take off when he gets to the second part.
In the recorded song, there’s a key change in the second half that requires Mars to raise his vocal register considerably.
As it turns out, the key change is no problem for him at all in the live version either! No matter how you feel about a given artist, it’s important that they’re able to back up their outward appearance with real performing talent in small concerts or other situations.
Fortunately, Mars is more than up to the challenge here and his performance has let everyone who viewed this video experience this song in a whole new way.
And the internet has definitely responded—the YouTube video has more than 70 million views!
While recorded songs are great, there’s something completely different about experiencing a live performance.
Though we can’t always afford to go see our favorite artists in concert, watching live recordings of their songs is a close second in some cases—and it’s always a huge letdown when our favorite performers can’t do that for us.
Fortunately, Mars has proven here that he’s a multi-dimensional talent with an amazing voice and plenty of emotion to spare.
Congratulations to Bruno Mars on this awesome interpretation of his hit song! Watch the full performance below:
