Though we’ve said it again and again, there are few musical reality shows that are as consistently awesome as The Voice.
For anyone who doesn’t know, the show is similar to other musical competition shows like American Idol but with a few simple twists.
First of all, the contestants must do “blind auditions” for the judges, meaning the judges have their backs turned and must buzz in to approve of the performance. Secondly, the judges are actively trying to recruit the most talented contestants while they perform because they’re competing to win as vocal coaches as well!
Needless to say, this results in some great competition.
One awesome performance to illustrate this took place in the 2017 season.
Just like all the other auditions, this one began with a contestant walking out on stage with all the judges’ backs still turned to her. After a moment, she starts singing “Stone Cold” by Demi Lovato.
As those who know the original song probably know, it begins in a low register before quickly sneaking up much higher—and is not a particularly easy song to sing. Still, the contestant sings it perfectly and soars effortlessly between registers from the very beginning.
Before long, two of the judges hit their buzzers and turn around to see who’s onstage!
As the song goes on, her performance only gets stronger and stronger.
The melody only gets more complex and difficult to sing, but the singer can seemingly do no wrong! After just a few more seconds, she convinces judge Jennifer Hudson to smash her buzzer as well… and right behind her, Adam Levine buzzes in as well.
After everyone has turned around, she finishes up the end of her performance on a more sincere note, slowing everything down for an emotional ending.
When it’s finally over, the crowd explodes with applause and all the judges on their feet!
All the energy and feedback that she’s gets is so positive that she can’t help but well up with tears.
A moment later, Levine runs onstage to hug her as well. After that, it’s finally time for her to introduce herself. She tells everyone that her name is Brooke Simpson and that she’s a native of Hollister, California.
The judges interview her to see who her inspirations are and what kind of music she listens to. Although she says that she loves all of the judges, her main inspiration is her mom.
Before long, all four of the judges are battling for her attention and her talent.
Everyone is promising Simpson that they’re going to help her win… but in the end, it’s time for her to pick.
Though everyone gave a great, impassioned pitch for why they should be her coach, in the end Simpson decides to go with Miley Cyrus. At these words, Cyrus gets out of her chair and starts dancing because she’s so excited!
Regardless of how it ended up, what’s true beyond a doubt is that Simpson had one of the best four-chair turns we’ve seen on The Voice in a long time! Although she definitely had the technical talent, she proved that she also had the soul to bring it all home.
Congratulations to Brooke Simpson on her awesome performance! Watch the full clip below:
