The word shag can have a few different meanings. If you’re British, it even has one more meaning, but we won’t get into that!

What is a shag then, and what is the most interesting way to use the word? Well, let’s investigate:

1. A coastal aquatic bird

The European or Common Shag is a breed of cormorant which lives along the coasts of southern and western Europe. It lives on fish and…you know what, we don’t care about this one, let’s move on!

2. A style of carpet

The “shag carpet” has long been a staple of people who can’t resist lying on the floor of their living rooms who want to maximize comfort. This is kind of interesting in a “carpets can be interesting kind of way” which is to say it’s not very interesting at all. Let’s try another…

3. The Carolina Shag dance style

Bingo, now this is an interesting type of shag (not including the British interpretation which I will leave to your imagination)! The Carolina Shag is a swing-style dance involving two dancers and a looooot of footwork. If you’ve never seen it, you have to, and lucky for you, I have a fantastic recommendation right here!

Brennar and Autumn are an incredible shag duo

This amazing dancing duet take to the stage with a toe tappin’ routine to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Travelin’ Band”.

They take their places center stage and wait for the music to begin, and when it does…wow! They move their feet faster than lightning, with incredible coordination and style. One comment even acknowledges that Autumn is doing this whole incredible routine in high heels!

“And she’s in heels. If I wore that high I could take step out of the car, shut the door and I’d be on my butt on the ground. Great work..”- Gail Remp

You can see how this style is derivative of swing dancing, and it’s nearly impossible to watch these two without tapping your own toes!

Their feet never stop moving, so not only do they have to be hugely skilled as dancers, but they would need to be insanely fit as well. I’d be out of breath two steps into this routine…

They are so seamlessly in-sync, they must have practiced every waking hour.

There is not a single move that is out of time, and they appear to be so in-the-moment that this routine must be so second nature for them. I have a hard time remembering the moves for the Macarena, so this level of intricacy is beyond comprehension.

And it’s not just the feet they use!

Their routine is interspersed with spins, dips and all sorts of moves nobody knows the names of. Their act is dynamic, and they seemingly effortlessly attempt and nail both interactive and individual fancy flourishes.

When they’ve completed their routine they jump straight into each other’s arms, ecstatic that they nailed the whole routine. They seem to perform the whole routine so effortlessly that it’s almost surprising to see that they’re so relieved that it went so well.
