What do you get when you fuse a spacious square, some funk, and people willing to dance?

You get this performance that happened in Sydney, Australia on a harbor foreshore—and it couldn’t have been better. Although there are plenty of flash mob videos online, few of them are as exciting as this one!

There is something remarkable and festive about outdoor flash mobs.

As the video begins, the day is bright, people are in high spirits and clear water sparkles in the sun.

Out of nowhere, the whole place fills with blaring music. Right away, it’s clear the song that’s playing is “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars. After that, it doesn’t take long the crowd to get into the groove.

Some of the passersby immediately realize what is about to happen and they take out phones to be ready for the big dance.

One breakdancer walks through the crowd and suddenly starts dancing. A moment later, his friend joins in. One of the funniest moments is when the ship sirens sound on in the middle of the dance, and you get the feeling that they are following the funk rhythm on purpose!

The atmosphere explodes in a few moments and place fills with dancers in all directions.

Right after two breakdancers impress with their moves, a whole crowd gathers on the improvised public stage.

The choreography is stunning—we’re guessing they must’ve spent hours practicing this routine because they’re all perfectly synchronized! One particular thing that made us laugh a lot were the joggers running in the background, paying no attention to anything else that was going on. If anything, they seem used to it—maybe flash mobs are particularly popular in this part of town?

Regardless, this flash-mob is brilliant because all the boys and girls were totally immersed in their choreography—and we have to give props to the video technician who captured all the perfect moves!

There’s a man in a suit, young people dressed casually, boys in sportswear, an older guy in a shirt and tie, and women in baggy clothes—everyone is dancing shoulder to shoulder.

Put simply, flash mobs like this one show the beauty of music and dance: they bring people together regardless of their differences.

As the breakdancers bust their moves, the crowd is there cheering and clapping along with them.

To capture more of the magic, the camera even pans into the crowd to capture the reactions on their smiling faces! Although watching a flash mob in person is always a unique thrill, this one was especially energizing.

Since the video was posted, it got more than eight million views on YouTube.

As it turns out, this flash mob was a little less spontaneous than it initially seemed. According to a blog post online, this performance may have been a proof-of-concept performance for companies looking to plan viral marketing events—though it could also have been a team-building event as well. As the blog post notes, this performance had a clear purpose:

“Flash mobs, whether performed by your team or performed to your consumers and customers, are simply a terrific, cost-effective investment for your business and marketing teams.”

Now even flash mobs are going corporate! Even so, we have to admit that it was a good performance.

If experiential viral marketing is the way of the future, we guess we’re on board—after all, seeing this in person would’ve definitely brightened our day.

To be honest, if someone has to advertise something, it’s at least better to do it in a fun and engaging way like this.

Then again, having something this spontaneous turn out to be planned is a little bit of a bummer… but what do you think?
