In big cities, people generally use the subway for much faster transportation.
In places like New York City, driving by car is either slow, impractical or impossible. Because everyone is on the go, subways become a mainstay of urban life—and they’re usually full of people who don’t slow down to look around them. Fortunately, buskers and street performers can bring color and life to these once dim and dark subway platforms.
And that’s exactly what happened in this video!
A quintet of brass experts stormed New York City’s 34th Herald Street Square and put their instruments to good use. As soon as they started playing, they brought smiles to the faces of everybody who happened to be passing by.
As soon as they started playing, nobody knew what hit them!
Armed with saxophones, a trumpet, a trombone and a sousaphone, these five musicians performed a dance medley inside one of New York City’s busiest subways.
Although the protagonists of this story are definitely the horn players, don’t leave the drummer out! Without his back beat, their performance wouldn’t have had nearly as much punch.
The band in the video calls themselves Lucky Chops.
Lucky Chops was formed last 2006 in New York City, playing mostly jazz and pop music. The band is composed of Josh Holcomb the trombone player, Daro Behroozi on tenor sax, Leo Pellegrino on baritone saxophone, Joshua Gawel on the trumpet, Raphael Buyo using the sousaphone and finally Charles Sams as their percussionist.
The group has always been known for doing covers of popular songs with a bit of their own twist.
As the group shows perfectly, it pays to stop, look and listen to the world around you!
Normally, passengers get on the subway, hop on a train, and pay no mind to what’s going on around them. Still, Lucky Chops are impossible to ignore! Their performance starts off energetic as ever, as they dance while playing their instruments to songs like “I Feel Good.” Everyone around them really felt funky—and many of them stopped to support these youngsters by throwing them some money.
Still, this saxophone duo has some show-stealing chops!
Behroozi looks more or less normal while playing the sax, but Pellegrino looks like a cartoon character with his pink cotton candy hair! Even so, the two perform an exhilarating duet while looking like they were having the best time of their lives. The duo took the spotlight by rhyming their baritone and tenor saxophones together, making perfectly blended music.
Out of breath? Never! These two are a couple of natural air-benders.
At the same time, the sousaphonist blows his horn while sounding like a police or ambulance siren. While he’s doing that, he jumps around and dances while having the time of his life! The trumpeter and the trombonist are the hype men of the group, fishing for cheers as people pass by. And the drummer? He keeps as cool as a cucumber.
All of them can play low to high notes when playing their instruments. Though it goes without saying, these professional musicians will never be out of breath no matter how exhausting it gets.
This video of Lucky Chop at Herald Square has almost two million views on YouTub—and for good reason. Check it out in the link below if you love funky, groovy and brassy music!
