If you’re a pop music fan, who would you consider your favorite pop star?
Although pop music has always been one of the most dominant genres, it seems today that there’s an unusually large number of talented singers out there in the world—and many of them are judges on music competition shows themselves. For those of us who like Broadway music and a bit of dance energy, we might vote for Lady Gaga. Others who like R&B a bit more might vote for Beyoncé.
Still, one of the best and somehow still under-appreciated pop stars has to be Adele.
Though she’s only 31 years old, Adele has already established herself as a huge talent.
Her second album, 21, sold more than 5 million copies since 2018, making it the second best-selling studio album out of the UK of all time. All told, she has sold 40 million albums has many more streams on her songs than that!
For those reasons, anyone who chooses to perform an Adele song has a tall task in front of them. Aside from her powerful voice, all of her singles have an iconic quality that makes them intimidating to try.
Fortunately, that didn’t stop a little boy named Gemario on the Netherlands’ The Voice Kids.
Though it goes without saying, The Voice Kids is an adapted version of the competition show The Voice.
Much like the latter, The Voice Kids has younger contestants come out and perform onstage in a blind audition for a team of judges. After that, the judges can compete to recruit children to their teams, working with them to help them win the show overall (and to win against the other judges themselves).
Although there’s some great talent out there among the younger generation, nobody was expecting someone as talented as Gemario!
When it all starts, a piano backing track helps him out—and the crowd immediately starts clapping when they hear he’s singing “Someone Like You.”
Although the judges can’t see who’s singing, their faces are already full of excitement. They look at each other and comment on the incredible vocal control and vibrato that this contestant already has.
Although he’s already nailed the first verse, the song really soars when he gets to the first chorus!
After he hits a couple of the high notes, the song is almost over—and one of the judges hits their buzzer just in time!
Although we’re shocked that everyone wasn’t fighting over Gemario’s talents, we’re glad someone recognized him!
While there will always be all kinds of undiscovered talent in the world, shows like this one are so valuable for bringing it to a wider audience. There’s something so exciting about watching someone find their voice to express themselves so fully—particularly when they’re as young and talented as Gemario so clearly is
Though most of us probably don’t keep up with The Voice Kids (unless you live overseas), this performance is one of their most popular clips on YouTube with more than 16 million views. Still, it’s not hard to see why!
Congratulations to Gemario on an amazing audition and best of luck in the future! Watch the full performance in the video below:
