Every so often, musicians do a cover song that sounds just as good or better than the original.

It’s those types of performances that bring chills to the body and leave you begging for more. When Justin Vernon of Bon Iver covered “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” it was absolutely one of the best covers we’ve seen in a while!

There’s a reason this video went massively viral.

When Justin Vernon covered this song in the studio, he had no idea how good it would be.

As the clip begins, Vernon sits down in front of the piano and immediately starts playing the song. The camera focuses on his hands as he gracefully presses the keys. Before long, the view switches to his face and the voice of an angel flows out.

His smooth and sultry voice has a unique raspiness to it. You can tell he puts his soul into his music from the very start, and the energy he brings is deep and authentic.

Justin has such a powerful voice, making the video extremely impactful.

It’s almost as if he’s singing a true story—you can hear the pain in his voice. Reading the music off of a single sheet of paper, the brilliant singer is faultless throughout the whole cover.

Some musicians are in a league of their own, and Vernon is one of them! He started Bon Iver back in 2006 and released their debut album by 2007. During the recording of the album, “For Emma, Forever Ago,” Justin spent three months isolated in a cabin.

As the sensational cover performance continues, he showcases his stunning vocal control.

Vernon has great control over his tone. He goes note-by-note, making each melody his own. Any musician knows how hard it is to simultaneously play an instrument and sing. After all, some never manage to master it.

“Just found out my wife loves another man. She’s been cheating on me for 4 months. This was a peaceful song though, it pulled my heartstrings. The realness of the lyrics speaks a lot. It’ll be alright in the end. You can’t make someone love you.” Said one YouTube user.

“Hey y’all so like a year ago I used to cry to this song every night from heartbreak. Flash forward a year and I’m in the most amazing relationship of my life with the perfect human being. Basically, it does get better and you will find the right person for you even if it feels like an eternity. It will happen. It will.”

The true message this song delivers is profound. You can’t make someone love you; if it’s meant to be, it will happen. Vernon obviously felt deeply about the meaning of this song—and that’s probably why the cover came out so well!
