Queen’s iconic hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” has been covered in countless musical performances over the years, but this classic song is not often transformed into an ice-skating routine.
However, the Canadian Synchronized Skating Championship attendees were treated to a unique spectacle when the NEXXICE Senior team decided to interpret this 70s classic on ice.
With Freddie Mercury’s voice echoing in the background, the performance was nothing short of captivating.
Queen may have burst onto the music scene decades ago, but their songs continue to resonate with audiences of all ages.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” is no exception.
According to The Guardian, it holds the title of “the most streamed song from the 20th century,” and it ranks 166th on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list.
Given the song’s legendary status, it’s no surprise that the NEXXICE Senior skating team chose it for their performance.
The routine begins with the skaters moving in slow, graceful motions across the ice, mirroring the a cappella opening of “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Dressed in black, their movements are perfectly synchronized with the rhythm of the song.
As the song transitions into Freddie Mercury’s ballad, the 16 skaters glide around the rink in a group, setting the stage for the more dramatic moves to come.
Following the iconic lyrics, “I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all,” four of the team members are lifted into the air in splits, a move that elicits cheers of amazement from the crowd.
The NEXXICE Seniors are known to be strangers to delivering impressive routines.
As stated on their Facebook page, they are the first Canadian team in history to be crowned World Synchronized Skating Champions in April 2009 and again in April 2015.
They are also the reigning 11-time National Champions.
The opera section of “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a favorite for many, with its nonsensical lyrics and impressive vocal sounds.
The skaters match the playful nature of this part of the song with whimsical moves of their own.
They spin in repeated circles and glide together in a snake-like line, keeping the audience’s eyes glued to the ice.
As the rock section of “Bohemian Rhapsody” kicks in, the skaters pick up speed, causing the crowd to go wild.
The performance concludes with a breathtaking finale.
The sole male skater of the group performs a handstand while his teammates hold his legs high in the air, a perfect ending to a mesmerizing routine.
Freddie Mercury once said, “You can do what you want with my music, but don’t make me boring.”
It’s a high-energy routine that beautifully complements the tune.
One YouTube commenter pointed out, “16 skaters and not one mistake!”
The performance is a testament to the enduring appeal of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the incredible talent of the NEXXICE Senior team.
It’s a unique interpretation of a classic song that surely would have made Freddie Mercury proud.
As the skaters glide and spin on the ice, they bring a new dimension to the song, proving that music and movement can come together in truly magical ways.
