Bocelli. It is a name that sends shivers down one’s musically loving spine. The man is a singing sensation known for may unforgettable songs and timeless hits that only a voice like his could carry. It’s even more special when their talent gets passed down. Lucky then when they have kids who have inherited not just the striking good looks but that heavenly voice as well.
This is Matteo, Andrea Bocelli’s son. He carries the name well.
He was born in 1997 and has been featured in his father’s tracks. He has a brother named Amos, naturally a gifted musician as well. Amazing genes. Here he is singing a duet with Nuška Drašček, a Slovenian singer, to the tune of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t help falling in love”.
Matteo looks great in a tux. He stands tall, his good looks adding to his stage presence, as he croons,
“Wise men say
Only fools rush in
But I can’t help falling in love with you”
Nuška walks in from behind Matteo, giving him a sweet smile before she takes over,
“Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin
If I can’t help falling in love with you?”
Her voice is powerful, her control amazing as she carries the melody with the piano. The moment she and Bocelli sing together, it’s apparent that their voices are a perfect match for this duet. Matteo’s lower otcave and cooler tone blends well with the higher, on fire style of his partner. Their voices seem to control the tempo too, the band just playing along to this masterpiece.
The song was recorded in 1961 by Elvis for the album Blue Hawaii.
The melody was based on “Plaisir d’amour“, a very popular French love song composed in 1784 by Jean Paul Egide Martini. Nearly five decades later and people are still singing this song. It’s a popular choice for karaoke, easy guitar playing, and romantic moments.
Many other artists have covered this song as well.
The Stylistics in 1976, UB40 in 1993, U2 in 1993, Pearl Jam in 2000, Twenty One Pilots in 2012, and even Ed Sheeran has a cover of this beautiful song. Find yourself with your loved one, play this and see if you can resist a hug or a kiss. Or even both!
It’s such a flexible song. Singers and bands can set different arrangements to match their own style while not taking anything away from the essence of the original. Listen to these two!
“Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be”
In the case of Matteo Bocelli and Nuška Drašček, it was a display of their powerful voices .
There are hints of classical, opera, and even jazz but notice how neither one of them overpowers the other, instead they communicate by smiling and taking cues of one another’s singing.
Matteo towers over her but in no way does the height difference deter the stunning vocals of Nuška, her control and power sustaining the piano and violins, matching them note for note while balancing the duet really well. She’s an incredible singer!
There may be many versions out there but if there were a list of the best ones, surely this would be in the top 3!
