It’s interesting to see how things were at the beginning of someone’s career, in a different era, with different possibilities.

The year is 1964 and people, mostly young, gathered at the Newport Folk Festival. We can see the fields full of young people sitting on the ground in front of the stage. Pete Seeger humorously announces “a musician who ran away from home 17 times, and got brought back 16.”

Bob Dylan enters the scene, dressed in his most recognizable outfit, looking young with an acoustic guitar in his hands.

His smile is huge, and we can see him having an adorable communication with the audience and sharing a few jokes along before the real show begins. The entire time, he plays two instruments at once.

As impressive as it sounds, Dylan manages to combine guitar and harmonica and to play them both simultaneously.

He’s got a harmonica neck holder that fixes the small instrument right in front of his mouth so his hands can be free for the guitar magic. He plays both of them perfectly and we have to admit that the sound of harmonica adds that little extra something to one of Bob Dylan’s most popular songs. “Mr. Tambourine Man” was recorded in 1964, but went on to become the song Dylan most performed live. The catchy and expansive melody caught the ears of many artists including The Byrds, Judy Collins, Odetta, and Stevie Wonder.

The hit even song appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 best songs ever.

The camera is mostly focused on Dylan and his amazing performance.

His singing is on point and the jangly guitar sound will surely move you. However, the camera also shows us around the stage, and all the young faces in the audience that are completely immersed in the surrealistic imagery of the song. This performance might be in black and white, but you know a happy face when you see one.
