When it comes to pop artists who have had a huge impact on the world, few people come to mind more readily than Beyoncé.

By this point, everybody in the world likely knows who Beyoncé is. She was born in 1981 and has been performing since she was just a little girl at age nine. She first had a singing and rapping girls’ group called Girl’s Tyme in 1990.

That group went on to perform on Star Search in 1992—and later went on to become Destiny’s Child! She’s had so many number one hits and number one albums that it’s hard to imagine Beyoncé in a non-manicured sense.

Fortunately, there are a few video performances out there that remind us just how Beyoncé got so popular and successful.

As you may already know, pop artists often give back to their fans and to the public by doing intimate performances for fans or others in need.

In some cases, that may mean giving performances to those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to see the artist in question, or to those who are sick. One of the more popular and affecting ways to do this is to go to a hospital where people are recovering from serious illnesses to share your talents with them.

And that’s exactly what Beyoncé did at one hospital in Singapore.

The performance we’re talking about took place at the National University Hospital in Singapore in 2009.

The performance was arranged for the children’s cancer ward at the hospital—and Beyoncé’s incredible singing proved once again just how she became the star that she is today.

As she sits down, she’s surrounded by a group of back-up musicians and videographers. After she gives a quick spoken word introduction, she starts singing.

Needless to say, the performance showcases just how incredibly talented she is.

The song she picks to sing is “Halo,” which is an appropriate choice for the circumstances.

As the singing starts, everyone in the crowd is snapping to keep the rhythm. With just a simple guitar behind her voice, Beyoncé starts into her song. Because “Halo” got so much radio play, everybody probably knows the words by this point. Still, what you may not be used to is just how good Beyoncé’s voice can be in nearly any setting.

Just in case you thought the recorded version of “Halo” had much auto-tune done on it, this should definitely prove that wrong.

Although the song requires plenty of high and low notes in it, Beyoncé sings them all here with total precision and control.

While her singing is as technically impressive as it always is, it’s also one of the more heartfelt versions of this that we’ve ever heard. Because the song has such an uplifting and inspiring message, it’s not hard to feel moved while listening to it—especially because the kids who are hearing it need to be uplifted so much.

Still, the most impressive part comes at the very end of the song.

After the main choruses and verses of the song are over, Beyoncé starts harmonizing over the guitar.

Although this happens in the recorded version as well, hearing her improvise on it live is a completely new experience! No matter who you are, it’s hard to deny just how much musical talent Beyoncé has to pull something like this off with complete ease. By this point in the song, everyone is watching and filming it all on their phones.

When it’s all over, the crowd erupts into applause!

Once stars get hugely successful, it’s easy to dismiss them or say that they’re overrated.

Fortunately, videos like this exist to remind us why we fell in love with them in the first place. Although Beyoncé’s talent would be impressive enough on its own, in the context of performing for the sick kids in this video, it takes on an entirely new meaning. When these busy artists take time out of their schedules to give back like this, it adds an entirely new dimension to their work and their character.

Thanks so much to Beyoncé for giving back to these kids! Check out the full performance below:
