Enjoying the perks of being a student is probably the best part of the entire college experience.
From joining different clubs, going on road trips and attending parties, there are a bunch of options when you’re young and going to school.
Even so, music conservatories like the Berklee College of Music often are stricter than big public universities, as all the students are there to hone their talent.
For a taste of how hard these kids work, take a look at how Berklee College of Music won the 2014 International Championship of Collegiate Acapella.
ICCA was founded in 1996 and attracts hundreds of college acapella groups each year.
The four-letters shortcut stands for the International Championship of Collegiate A Capella, which means that it’s a competition between a lot of acapella groups.
This is actually a pretty big deal since the ICCA tournament takes place from January through April in nine regions: Northwest, Southwest, Midwest, Great Lakes, Central, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, South and the United Kingdom.
In the end, it all comes down to the top two college groups that advance to the semi-finals in their respective regions.
After that, the winner of each semifinal is invited to participate in finals, currently held in the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Each group’s musical performance is the focal point, but the choreography is also important. Groups can range in size from eight to 20 members.
To date, Berklee alumni have won 297 Grammy Awards.
Berklee College of Music is the largest independent college for music, and they offer classes in both contemporary and historic styles.
Students at Berklee can opt for rock, hip hop, reggae, salsa, heavy metal, bluegrass, jazz and modern American music classes.
The performance in this video is by Berklee’s student club, Pitch Slapped.
Their latest album Sincerely is now available on iTunes, and you can always visit their official site for more information.
The club currently has 16 members, though all 2020 auditions have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The video features some amazing performers including Nathan Hartono, who’s very famous in Singapore.
Pitch Slapped will blow you away with their magnificent medley of six songs.
There are 15 members in the video, and the story begins in black and white when Nathan mimics a singing puppet. Soon after, his colleague comes over to adjust his singing by moving his hands in different positions. “Take Our Time” goes on first, and it’s followed by “Radio Song,” “Ain’t It Fun,” “Take Back the Night” and “Say Something.” The show ends with “Come on Over.”
Everyone in the group has such powerful voices, and the duo who sang “Say Something” completely nailed it!
The girl who sang “Ain’t It Fun” with her warm and raspy voice left us in awe. Still, what we enjoyed most is that everyone got the same amount of time in the spotlight!
These people know how to collaborate and to emphasize each other’s qualities—that’s the kind of teamwork we could all learn from!
Since the video was posted, it has racked up more than three million YouTube views.
This performance is more than a half-decade old, and these people have graduated and gone on with their careers.
Even so, seeing their college days serves as a lovely reminder that everyone goes through similar phases in life. The journey of chasing a dream and success has to be fun all along the way, just as it was for these students.
Although their talent shines through, their happiness also radiates from the screen—and that’s the kind of energy we all need more of during hard times!
