Celine Dion’s 1997 power ballad “My heart will go on” serves as the main soundtrack to the film Titanic. The song proved to be such a hit it topped the charts in over twenty countries.
We’re talking Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
It is considered as Dion’s signature song, being the world’s best selling single of 1998 plus many other awards and titles.
Funny when you think that Titanic film director James Cameron did not want such a song, nor did Celine Dion want to sing it after she just did the song for Beauty and the Beast. It was her husband who helped convince Celine to try it out.
It is by no means an easy song to sing.
Fast forward to 2021 and the song still holds its position as one of the greatest power ballads ever.
And not a lot of singers can cover the Dion hit either. You know why.
But on The Voice Kids, a young woman named Bente Van Der Steeg took to the stage with her violin and proceeded to blow the judges and her viewers away with her cover of the Dion classic.
Hailing from Genemuiden in the Netherlands, Bente plays the familiar intro on her violing, quicky getting a positive reaction from the show’s judges.
And how many young musicians play the violin?
Bente is no ordinary violinist either. That much was clear from the moment she opened her mouth and began singing, matching Dion’s pitch and tone for each part of the power ballad.
You wouldn’t think Bente could either by the looks of her.
That sweet, charming expression lulls you into thinking she’s just another good singer.
But no one was prepared for the power and the control this young lady showed on stage.
Bente’s barely began when two of the judges hit those buttons, swiveling around to face the young violinist. Bente’s family cannot believe what is going on! She hasn’t even started!
The moment she sings the first few words, the remaining two judges turn their chairs around to see who this incredible talent is.
What’s scary is that Bente is a very young singer.
Meaning she’s yet to mature vocally. And yet here she is hitting note after impressive note that the great Celine Dion left for the world to hear.
With the proper coach, years of training and performing, and a lot of shows, Bente Van Der Steeg will take the world by storm.
And let’s hope she keeps on playing that violin too!
She is brave for choosing to sing this song for an audition.
Bente is so full of talent and so full of promise, we can only hope to see and hear more of her in the future. By the looks of this audition, she’ll go on and on.
