If you’ve spent much time watching the Got Talent series, you know just how diverse the talent base on these shows is.
While most of us are probably only familiar with the American or British versions of the show, you’re probably used to seeing a steady parade of singers and dancers, with the occasional oddball act as well.
Still, the show has plenty of international versions as well, including an entire franchise for Asia. Needless to say, different versions of the show feature different acts as well.
And this one was particularly special.
The performance took place on the show’s 2017 season.
Like any other act on any other version of the show, it all began with the contestant walking out on stage and introducing himself. As he explains, his name is Neil Rey Garcia Llanes.
He’s only 19 years old and he’s from the Philippines. To perform on the show, he had to travel overseas—and it was the first time he ever left the country! At this news, the audience gives him a round of applause.
Without much further ado, the judges clear the way for him to perform.
Without missing a beat, Neil starts into his vocal performance.
From the beginning, it’s clear that he’s going to do some beatboxing. Right away, he explains that every sound the audience is going to hear is made only be a human voice.
With that, he starts into an impressive beat complete with electronic synthesizer sounds and drums. After doing a couple of example beats, he stops the performance and breaks down some of what he’s doing to the audience.
As he explains, he has five distinct sounds that he often performs.
Next, he does an isolated demonstration of each sound so everyone can hear them… though everybody is a little confused.
After running through all five of them, he asks the crowd if they want to hear all five of them at the same time! At this, the whole crowd cheers. Sure enough, he starts again with the first sound.
Before long, he adds in another with no problem at all, counting along on his fingers as he goes. By the time he adds the third song, things are starting to get complicated. The fourth is even trickier.
Still, by the time he’s doing all five sounds at the same time, the crowd can’t believe what they’re hearing!
After that, everyone in the crowd is dancing—including the hosts backstage.
When it’s finally over, the judges get on their feet and give him a standing ovation. As the judges explain, there are hugely famous DJs who make millions a night by doing what he just did electronically—but he can do it all on his own!
The other judges also tell him that although they’ve seen beatboxers before, they’ve rarely seen someone so unique and entertaining in that style.
Before long, all of the judges are ready to vote.
Though it might go without saying, Neil’s performance got him four yeses!
While shows like this are so often about underdog stories, sometimes they’re also about discovering new things that human beings can do. While we’ve all seen beatboxing before, it’s still refreshing to see someone like Neil come along and reinvent what’s possible! And seeing how far this clip has spread around the internet, it’s clear that the whole world agrees.
Congratulations to Neil on his amazing performance! Watch the full thing in the clip below:
