“God Only Knows” was written for the American rock band The Beach Boys, and it was released in May 1966 on the Pet Sounds album.

The song became a hit and peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart. It’s not the only accolade the song received. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame includes it as one of “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” In a poll on MTV, it placed at number 28 on the UK’s Nation’s Favourite Lyrics as well.
