If you’re a fan of singing competition shows, chances are that The Voice is high on your list.
For anyone who doesn’t know, the show works a little differently that some other competing competition shows.
Unlike American Idol where the judges get a firsthand look at everyone performs, The Voice has contestants walk out onstage to perform a “blind audition” where the judges have their backs turned. If the judges like what they hear, they hit their buzzers to turn around and see who’s singing.
Beyond that, the judges also compete amongst themselves to be the best vocal coach with the best team.
What many people also don’t know is that The Voice is an international franchise with so many different versions.
Though there’s the straightforward versions of the show that are special to each country, there’s also the additional shows that are dedicated purely to letting children and teens perform.
Although plenty of the performances from The Voice Kids are pretty impressive, one in particular was truly something special.
The audition we’re talking about took place on the show’s 2015 season with a young boy named Bart.
Like any other audition, it began with the contestant getting out onstage before a panel of judges.
First he sits down at the piano and he begins playing some familiar notes. Anyone who’s a fan of John Legend will know right away that he’s playing “All Of Me,” one of Legend’s biggest hit songs—and one of his most heartfelt.
Although the original version definitely reflects a lot of power and soulfulness, Bart takes a unique tack on it by trying to underplay his delivery.
Instead of trying to go bigger with it, Bart decides to go smaller and more delicate.
It only takes about 20 seconds for Bart to get his first button from the judges.
As he keeps playing, it’s clear that his voice is beautiful and precise, but it also has a delicate and intimate tone that’s so hard to teach.
As the song goes on, some of the notes get higher and harder to sing—but he still manages to reach all the way up to them without needing to amplify the power of his voice too much. The result is a performance that stays so gentle and intimate the entire way through.
Though it might go without saying, it’s not long until all the rest of the judges smash their buzzers for Bart as well!
Although this audition originally aired in the Netherlands, the clip has since gotten some 41 million views on YouTube!
While there have been some great contestants on these shows throughout the years, it’s not hard to see why this one has been so popular.
On shows like The Voice, it’s important to have the vocal talent and to pick the right song, but it’s also important to have a unique presence or angle on the music you perform. Even though “All Of Me” is a huge, soaring song, Bart wasn’t afraid to claim it for his own, to turn it inside out by making it small again. And it paid off!
