Nowadays, we don’t often see quartets except in movies or as a joke!
While they are typically used as comedic elements, there is actually a TON of skill that goes into harmonizing four people to such an expert level.
When you have a quartet group that is really good, it’s an amazing thing to hear.
What even is a “barbershop” quartet?
Well, a quick Google search tells us:
A barbershop quartet is a group of four singers who sing music in the barbershop style, characterized by four-part harmony without instrumental accompaniment, or a cappella. – Wikipedia
Originally, they were primarily made of male-only groups, but nowadays, that rule doesn’t really apply.
There are some amazing ladies out there who can harmonize with anything!
When you have ladies in a “barbershop quartet”, it’s kindly called a “beauty shop quartet”!
Despite the funny name, it’s a real thing! In fact, they have competitions and events for this sort of thing.
Think of it almost like a real-life Pitch Perfect. One group known as the “Girls Quartet” went viral with one of their performances and it shows us just how amazing just a few voices can be.
Known as GQ, the group was warming up in what seems to be a classroom.
Someone clearly decided to film the warm-up and BOY are we glad they did!
The resulting video is incredible and makes you wonder at why God didn’t give you a voice like them.
When they all come together it’s one of those “greater than the sum of their parts” type things.
As they start singing, one of the girls hums a note to get everyone in the same key.
Once they have their pitch locked in, it’s time to go! They start with some classy “buh-buh’s” and you are instantly transported into a time where people were wearing pinstripes and signing in their red and white suits!
They start harmonizing and it sounds like they are from a movie.
It’s not often that someone has a great voice, but ALL of these girls have a set of pipes. They go high, low, and everything in between
. With this style of singing, so much of its beauty comes from the way they harmonize together, sounding low and high all at the same time. If you’re not careful, you may catch some goosebumps!
The song is “Something Tells Me I’m So Into Something Good”.
There are a few moments where one of the girls takes a lead role and gets a “solo moment”.
When the solo moment is happening, the other ladies are singing bits that don’t take away from the performance, but add to it with nobody singing over one another!
Finishing the song, they take it up a level!
Getting louder and higher, they hit levels you didn’t think was possible!
It’s truly a work of art to watch and to remember that this isn’t even a full performance and just for their friends, you want to see them professionally!
