With tons of incredibly talented dance acts across all television talent shows across the world, it can be quite hard to create a unique and entertaining performance that really stands out. The Belgian dance group known as ‘Baba Yega’ certainly had no trouble at all mesmerizing the judges and the audience in Belgium’s Got Talent.
Immediately, the act starts with an incredible amount of intriguing mystique. Before the judges even realize that the act has started, a large cardboard box is being brought to the stage by some crew members of the television program.
When nothing happens, the two hosts of the show decide to go check out the box themselves, only to find a masked and completely still contestant inside. Immediately, the judges are freaked out by the masked man, and seemingly also an alien – that is, until the music hits.
When the words ‘Baba Yega’ are being heard from the speakers in a rather uncomfortable tone, judge Dan Karaty says that “he is going to get a nightmare”. At the split second the first beat hits, the masked man starts moving brilliantly with an indescribable energetic flow.
The immensely talented dancer did scare one of the judges quite good, but they’re quickly absolutely mesmerized by his performance and unique dancing style. The outfit and mask of the dancer seem to connect to the audience without a sweat – when the man asks for the audience to clap, everyone follows along right away.
“That’s so cool”, one of the judges said in the middle of his act. And the best was even yet to come.
In true ‘Baba Yega’ fashion, the lead dancer pulled four other dance members from the backstage area for a group performance. The combination of the electronic dance music, incredible moves, and one-of-a-kind personality has made Baba Yega one of the must see acts of the past few years.
The alien dance group received a standing ovation from the crowd and the judges. Four yesses were quite obvious, but the fun wasn’t over yet.
Even when not performing, the crew still maintains their Baba Yega personas, including unique moves and gestures that the audience really seems to love. They also don’t talk, and simply respond with funny little ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ cards, as well as their trademarked gestures.
And even though judge Dan Karaty was hesitant to use his Golden Buzzer because he thought that the dance crew didn’t need it to progress to the finals, he eventually couldn’t resist and sent them straight to the live shows.
At the finals of Belgium’s Got Talent 2016, the dance group managed to win the votes of the audience and were declared the deserving winners of the popular talent show.
What a performance!
