Though it might go without saying, reality competition shows are popular all over the world.
In America, we tend to think that the whole trend began with American Idol, which is more or less true. Still, Idol was also a worldwide phenomenon that spawned all kinds of other television shows as well.
Though the core idea of having talented singers compete with one another has been preserved across all these different shows, things have gotten wackier, more specific and more interesting over the years.
To take just one example of this phenomenon, consider The Voice, which is also an international franchise.
Though the show also features singing competitions, it does so differently than many other shows.
Instead of seeing the judges right away, each of the contestants performs a “blind audition” while the judges’ backs are turned. The performers sing and if the judges like what they hear, they can hit a button to turn around and try to win that performer onto their team.
Each season, there’s one winning performer and one winning vocal coach. Aside from this interesting format, the show also has different versions in each country around the world—and sub-categories within those versions as well.
The clip we’re talking about today comes from the 2016 season of The Voice India Kids.
Though it’s like the other shows, this one is open only to younger contestants as the name suggests.
The performer in question is Ayat Shaikh, and she’s only six years old. From the beginning, it’s clear she’s one of the most adorable little girls on the show ever!
After some introduction, she walks out on stage and the background music starts playing. The song she’s singing is a done in a traditional Bollywood style, and from the very first notes, all the judges are in complete awe.
Her voice is so flexible and so accurate even though she’s so young!
After just a handful of notes, all the judges are smiling and the audience’s hearts are melting.
A moment later, two of the judges smash their buzzers to turn around. Needless to say, her performance only gets better and better as it goes on.
No matter how young she is, it’s clear she has so much charisma and stage presence. Although there are young contestants on the show, few are as young as Shaikh was—and few of them are as accurate and adorable as she was either!
When the performance is over, the whole crowd gives her a huge round of applause.
Since the clip was posted online, it has been watched a staggering 136 million times on YouTube!
Still, it’s not hard to see why Shaikh has generated so much buzz for herself. Though it’s always cute and fun to see little kids performing on shows like this, it’s rare for them to be so confident and so professional at such a young age.
The song she chose to sing wasn’t easy, but her voice was so strong and so smooth as she switched in between notes—and she sang the whole thing with a big smile on her face. Needless to say, we’re definitely going to be seeing more of her in the future.
