Susan Boyle has come a long way since Simon Cowell sneered at her during her audition on Britain’s Got Talent. And that journey hasn’t been easy.
Boyle was faced with adversity from birth. She was raised thinking that she had a learning disability due to being deprived of oxygen but later found out that she had Asperger syndrome with an above average IQ, according to Wikipedia.
Boyle says that she was also bullied as a child.
She went on to win several local singing competitions but skipped out on her audition for The X Factor believing that people were only chosen for their looks. She almost abandoned her Britain’s Got Talent audition thinking that she was too old, however, her vocal coach convinced her otherwise.
It was there that Cowell rolled his eyes at her when she told him that she was 47, just before video footage showed her admitting that she had never been married or even kissed.
Whether it was staged or real, the audience had a disdain for Boyle until she opened her mouth.
That’s when her entire life changed. Boyle renewed the world’s faith that success and acclaim in the music industry can come from having true talent, instead of just being well connected or by selling sex appeal.
Boyle showed the world that having a true gift for singing can get you to the top. She went on to produce an album called “I Dreamed a Dream” which became the UK’s best-selling album of all time and was the second best-selling album in the U.S. in 2009.
She later released her second album titled “The Gift,” a Christmas album, and became the third act to ever top both the UK and US album charts twice in the same year. “The Gift” debuted at number one.
Boyle was invited to perform “Away in a Manger” which was featured on “The Gift” at Rockefeller Plaza for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in 2010.
The performance began with an all children’s choir starting the song with Boyle’s equally angelic voice chiming in. Her voice is beautiful and sounds out of this world and heavenly. Which is fitting because she was surrounded by giant angel decorations during the performance.
Boyle seems to have been made to sing Christmas songs as her emotional approach to singing truly fills you with the holiday spirit.
