Singing in front of a crowd can be a very nervewracking thing.
Some people get such bad stage fright, they actually throw up from it! Other people can shake so bad, they can’t actually perform.
For those who can get past their stage fright, they can prove just how amazing their voices are and stun everyone around them.
For one choir girl, all she had to do was get up in front of all of her classmates. That isn’t so hard, right?
Emma chose an older tune to sing in front of her peers and it was a perfect choice. As soon as she started singing the opening lyrics of “At Last,” Emma’s nerves seemed to just melt away.
At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over and life is like a song, oh yeah
At last the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up clover the night I looked at you
I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
Most of us know “At Last” because it was popularized by the talented Etta James in 1960.
But did you know that the song was written nearly 20 years before that? In 1941, “At Last” was written for Sun Valley Serenade by Mack Gordon and Harren Warren.
In Sun Valley Serenade the song was sung by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, with vocals by John Payne and Lynn Bari.
Etta James covered the song in 1960 and the rest became history. It became her best-known song and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
Bing Crosby also covered “At Last” in the 1970s, but we all know and love the version that Etta did.
Do you think that Emma did Etta justice? I’d say so, given she’s a young choir girl finding her footing!
Just list to her cover these lyrics:
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill I’ve never known, oh yeah
You smiled, you smiled oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in Heaven
For you are mine at last
