A mute comedian named Ahren Belisle delivered his stand-up set on America’s Got Talent and you just have to see it.
Aside from being a comedian, he is also a mental health advocate who creates content to spread awareness.
Now the show is no stranger to the most unique acts coming from the most extraordinary individuals.
But the 28-year-old software engineer from Northern Ontario came onstage with a mobile phone as his accompaniment, meant to help him with the words.
In his introduction and chat with the four judges, Ahren Belisle revealed he also has cerebral palsy.
He goes on to joke with the judges that he “can’t dance” so he’s going to do stand-up comedy.
Ahren started doing comedy around a year ago after making a bunch of comics at a comedy show in Portugal laugh.
It was those very same people who convinced him to try it.
Judge and fellow comic Howie Mandel then says that comedy is all about timing. So how does Ahren manage?
He says he takes advantage of the silences while he’s typing, explaining that the pauses build tension in the audience.
“I think people enjoy watching me laugh at my own joke that I’m writing.”
Ahren then points to his service dog off stage, saying that the dog is trained to go for the vocal cords of hecklers
The poor dog looks bamboozled as everyone laughs.
The act begins with the “elephant in the room”, because, as he says, who ordered Stephen Hawking off of the internet?
“He might be smarter than me, but I would beat him in a race … unless the race is downhill, then I’m screwed,” Ahren says about the late wheelchair-bound theoretical physicist.
But he wasn’t done.
“He had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and I am Canadian. Specifically I’m half-French, on my left side.”
He then notes, “I also have a brain muscle disability called cerebral palsy, but being French is way worse than a brain disability.”
At this point, the judges and the audience couldn’t hold it in any longer.
Ahren is brilliant!
His monologue is written in sections, queued up on his phone fire off at the right time.
So Ahren doesn’t have to spontaneously deliver a memorized routine. He even uses an app that can mimic voices.
He uses a female voice to imitate someone who criticized him on Instagram for calling himself handicapped.
Ahren also uses facial expressions and body language right on cue to add punctuation.
And his smile is priceless!
Simon Cowell starts things off and calls Ahren funny and fearless.
“Your dog is beautiful!” he says, “It was just a great, great audition.”
Sofia Vergara hopes that Ahren is the one comedian who will finally win AGT.
Heidi Klum says, “I love how you found your way. I think you’re very clever. You’re cheeky and you really were really funny.”
Howie says, “I cannot believe you’ve only been doing this for one year. You seem to have a grasp of timing and humor. You open up the conversation and normalize humanity and originality and you’re funny.”
He went on to add, “Sir, you’re not going to be doing engineering much longer. I think you’re going to be full time performing.”
It’s not surprising he got all four judges to say yes.
Howie is right and hopefully we get to see more of this brilliant comedian in the future!
