Time to meet Andrew Taylor Knight.

He is an Australian-Malaysian baritone who achieved his Master of Music from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Upon relocating to Sydney for his undergraduate studies, he underwent training guided by Maree Ryan AM and Simon Lobelson.

It must be pretty tense to stand on stage and hope that one of the four coaches would at least spin around while you’re singing.

For some singers, that doesn’t even happen.

For Knight though, Jason Derulo immediately spun as soon as he started singing.

Rita Ora, singer-songwriter Guy Sebastian and singer and actress Jessica Mauboy were just stunned and in awe with that they were hearing.

Knight sang “Largo al factotum” by Gioachino Rossini.

It is a piece from the renowned opera, “The Barber of Seville.”

This exuberant piece is a showcase of both vocal virtuosity and comedic brilliance, encapsulating the lively and spirited essence of the opera.

And exuberant is right as Knight’s voice took over the entire room.

It took awhile but Rita Ora couldn’t contain herself any longer, hitting her red button and spinning to face the handsome singer.

The crowd’s on their feet clapping along to Knight’s fantastic refrain of “Figaro, Figaro, Figaro!”

In the opera, the aria is performed by the character Figaro, a versatile and cunning barber who serves as the opera’s central “factotum” or jack-of-all-trades.

Figaro introduces himself as a master of all tasks, from hairdressing to matchmaking, and he uses his charm and wit to present his skills in a whimsical and entertaining manner.

“Largo al factotum” is frequently acknowledged as one of the most challenging baritone arias to perform within the operatic repertoire.

Successfully performing this aria not only demonstrates a singer’s technical prowess but also their ability to infuse the piece with character, charisma, and an engaging stage presence.

Knight, a baritone, nailed it.

He gets to the end with Derulo and Ora facing him but Guy Sebastian and actress Jessica Mauboy remain facing the audience, but you can see just how impressed they are.

Their loss for not turning around.

It’s really refreshing to see a contestant take the opera to a modern show amidst the usual acts.

Let’s hope we see more of Andrew Taylor Knight. Especially for the ladies watching.
