Though it might go without saying, The Voice is one of the most versatile and consistently interesting shows on television these days.

Although the trend of reality singing shows goes all the way back to American Idol, there’s something about the formula for The Voice that has endured and innovated in the reality genre.

For those who haven’t seen the show, each episode begins with a contestant coming out on stage before a panel of judges for a “blind audition.”

This means that as the person sings, the judges have their backs turned and can’t see them.

If the judges like what they hear, they can buzz in and turn around.

At that point, the judges compete amongst themselves to try and convince that person to join their team. In each season, there’s a winning contestant and a winning vocal coach as well.

Though it might go without saying, The Voice is an international franchise much like any other big singing competition show. Even if we’re familiar with the American version, many other countries and regions have their own takes on the show, each of which follows the same rules.

The performance we’re talking about today comes from the 2013 season of The Voice of Germany.

The singer in question is Andreas Kümmert, a performer who had already made it past the audition round on the show.

For those who didn’t see it, Kümmert wow-ed the crowd and the judges with his initial performance of “Rocketman” by Elton John. Though the original song is well-loved the world over, it’s a relatively slow and sad tune. In Kümmert’s version, he made it a lot more theatrical and added a whole new life to it!

After progressing through the show, Kümmert decided to take on another classic rock song.

This time, he was to perform “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by British rock band Procol Harum. The original version of the song begins with a sad, mournful organ part with drums playing behind it. Before long, the vocals come in. Once again, Kümmert takes the spirit of that original version and adds his own spin on it.

As soon as he starts singing, the judges have to just look at each other and smile.

Although he remains mostly faithful to the original version, he adds his own flourishes and embellishments that thrill the crowd.

Before long, all the judges and the audience members are cheering and singing along with him. After building up the tension, Kümmert hits one last huge note when it gets to the chorus and his voice soars.

When it’s all over, the crowd gives him a huge round of applause… and they even want him to do an encore. And incredibly enough, his encore version is even better than the first!

While there have been plenty of talented performers on the show throughout the years, Kümmert is particularly special!

Since the clip was loaded online, it has been viewed more than 10 million times… and it’s not hard to see why.

Above all, Kümmert’s song choice and performance show just how much power some of these old classic rock songs still have.

But even beyond that, he also showed just how important it is to bring your own personality to them when it comes to your interpretation. Needless to say, it’s easy to see why this video is getting so much traction online.

Congratulations to Andreas Kümmert on his amazing performance! Be sure to check out the whole thing in the link below:
