Some people probably experienced some of their most defining moments while they were in high school.
Those moments help us realize a lot about ourselves, and sometimes they tell us more about what we could do. The same goes for these teenagers, who shone in the spotlight as they gained the courage to play at their school’s talent show.
Playing rock music like this is hard to pull off, but these teens somehow did with just a few weeks of practice!
The metal genre is probably one of the complicated genres to play especially when you are yet to discover more about music.
It relies heavily on intricate note progressions, timings and a mode of singing that is hard to master.
However, these teenage boys at Becker High School in Minnesota bravely ventured the world of metal and took it to the stage after only a few weeks of rehearsing.
They participated at their school’s talent show and bravely took on the challenge.
They called themselves John Wilkes Tooth and The Plaque Assassins.
The band name is inspired by the name of the late President Abraham Lincoln’s assassin, and their band was composed of Jordan Maiers on the guitar and vocals, Luke O’Neil as the lead guitarist, Cody Sakry on the bass and Mark Peterson on the drums.
Setting their instruments at the school gym, the boys psyched themselves up for their performance of “Fade to Black,” a famous song from the band Metallica which was originally released in 1984.
The song started with a slow dramatic intro.
“Fade to Black” begins with a round of slow guitar plucks, with the second guitar accompanying its rhythmic melody.
The teenage band does it just as well as the original! Their timing and chord transitions were on point, and you could really see the amount of practice that they put into the song.
The vocalist Maiers began singing with his own voice, while not exactly doing a full impression of Metallica’s throaty vocals.
His vocals sounded great too, and it gave the song a soothing quality that everyone could enjoy.
They did great for an amateur metal band!
Maier and the band’s other guitarist, O’Neil, can definitely shred on guitar.
They have shown all the dexterity in the world as they blasted through riff after difficult riff.
The drummer rocked really hard and provided the rest of the band the beat that they needed to move the crowd. Moreover, they were highly coordinated as a band, coordinating their timings with subtle cues as they worked their way towards the end of the song. They really put effort into their performance, ending it with everyone giving them a big round of applause.
The band ended up in second place, but their performance won the internet!
Despite their efforts, the band only won second place in their school’s talent show.
However, someone was able to clip the whole performance and uploaded it on YouTube. It earned six million views and their little band was rained down on with compliments and tips coming from viewers all over the world.
They had their own mistakes and inaccuracies, but it’s understandable given that they rehearsed for only two weeks!
Whether if you are a metal fan or not, it’s hard not to compliment these boys on a job well done.
