When two young buskers strum through a classic song from the 50s and 60s, a crowd gathers and the video goes viral. Who are these two singers with velvet voices? You better hurry up and get on the bandwagon so that you can say you heard them before they were famous.
Allie Sherlock and Cuan Durkin, are two Irish buskers who met at Dublin’s premier shopping destination, Grafton Street.
In this video, they take on the classic “Unchained Melody.”
Allie Sherlock broke into our popular consciousness when a video of her singing Ed Sheeran‘s “Supermarket Flowers,” went viral. She was flown to the states for an episode of the Ellen show and now she’s becoming a household name.
At the time of the Sheeran cover, she was twelve-years-old. How many kids that age have a voice that can melt your heart?
Her duet partner is another up and coming talent. This is Cuan Durkin, a fellow busker on Grafton Street.
You’re gonna want to remember that name, so you can say you knew him when.
One YouTuber couldn’t keep her comment to herself about Allie’s charming duet partner.
“Omg… the way he looks at you and smiles!! So sweet and cute!!”
Many more agree. And when he goes for the high notes it’s like velvety chocolate ice cream.
Allie’s voice also very strong which makes them the perfect duet partners.
“Unchained Melody” is a song made popular and standard by The Righteous Brothers when they recorded it back in 1965. In 1990, the song had a resurgence when it was used in a pivotal seen in the movie “Ghost.”
Allie and Cuan do the song some serious justice when they strum their guitars and sing into the mic, busking on Grafton Street.
In 1983, Grafton Street was closed off to automobile traffic, and now it is one of Ireland’s preeminent shopping and eating destinations. And on the daily you can hear up and coming singers performing for the public.
Dublin’s Grafton Street has been a right of passage for many of the greatest Irish singers and songwriters. Someone’s level of talent is always apparent when busy shoppers stop and forget that they were busy shopping. Located in the heart of Dublin, Grafton Street is a wildly popular shopping street. Tourists and natives alike go there to see and be seen.
Many of today’s popular artists have put in time on Ireland’s premier shopping street.
Artists like U2’s Bono, Damien Rice, and Glen Hansard. Allie and Cuan hope to follow that path and with regular visits to the street, they have become mainstays. And their videos are watched by millions.
Will the Grafton Street Tradition Live on in 2020?
Glen Hansard of The Swell Season holds an annual Christmas eve impromptu busking session on Grafton Street, where famous singers and songwriters are invited to take part. In 2019, Bono returned to Grafton Street for the benefit concert. The proceeds benefit a charity to help the homeless. It has become a yearly Grafton Street Holiday tradition. But will Covid-19 change that? Everyone sure hopes so.
The YouTube comments are rolling in, and the consensus is beautiful.
“One of the most beautiful song ever made, Allie sang that song so well……she is truly blessed!”

“They are good. Young, cool, with sense of humour and will to live, to sing. Good servants of the songs.”
—
“Oh my goshhhh this was beautiful all the way. the way he looked at you and you him when singing those parts I loved that!”
There’s a moment in the video that Allie really likes. When she hits the high notes, Cuan is overjoyed. His face says it all.
So many folks on the internet and in-person have witnessed Allie’s soulful and exceptional voice. It’s pretty neat to see Cuan react as if he’s only just now experiencing the emotional power in her voice.
These two Irish talents are ripe to burst onto the mainstream recording charts. But for now, you can be one of the few that heard them before they got big. I’m sure you know someone else who can’t get enough of this song and would love to see two young talents from Dublin perform it beautifully.
