Although funk music is definitely something you feel, it’s a little bit hard to define.
Even so, world-famous funk musician Bootsy Collins did his best to put it in his own words:
“Funk is the absence of any and everything you can think of, but the very essence of all that is. And saying that, I’m saying funk is anything that we create in our minds that we want to do, what we want to be, but we don’t have the resources.”
In essence, Collins was saying that funk is everything you want to do based on your creative imagination. And musicians mostly incorporate funky sounds into their music to make it more rhythmic and danceable. At least, that’s what this group of fun-loving musicians did to Alicia Keys’ famous song “If I Ain’t Got You.”
The group in question is the popular funk cover band Scary Pockets.
For those who don’t know, Scary Pockets is a funk band that releases weekly covers on YouTube. With the help of the best session musicians in Los Angeles, they are able to produce wonderful collaborations together again and again. Today, they have over 100 videos on YouTube and a whopping 450,000 subscribers.
All their songs make viewers stomp their feet and clap, and this one is no different.
Keys’ original song is one that captured the whole world’s heart.
The lyrics are so meaningful and full of emotion, and when she Alicia sings them, they pack a lot of power. In the original version, the song gives listeners a sad and emotional vibe. Still, imagine yourself in a pub drinking one or two pints of beer to relax your mind or take out stress—and that’s the feeling Scary Pockets brings to the tune.
In this cover, the emotion is still there but anyone could dance along if they want to. They took something slow and sad and made it a bit happier.
Everyone was just having fun playing their instruments.
Everyone in the video seems like they’re having the time of their lives.
Every beat of the drum, every strum of the guitar and every stroke of the piano makes everybody in the room livelier than ever.
They are enjoying every second of their performance, and their facial expressions and body language say it all.
Still, that’s to say nothing of the charming vocals as well!
If the instrumentalists were looking cool on their own, the vocalist was outstanding in every way.
He complements the funky sounds the other four make and he looks effortless doing it. All his riffs and runs are so smooth, and he even puts some of his own twists in along the way. By the time it’s done, you can’t help but smile!
While the cover is great on its own, try playing it back at 1.25 speed for even more energy!
Needless to say, Scary Pockets are a talented band who have done it again with this one!
