Though there are plenty of people in the world who are talented singers, not everybody is equally suited to the same genres.

On musical competition shows like American Idol or America’s Got Talent, we often expect people to sing contemporary pop songs or iconic classic rock songs.

What’s a little more unexpected, however, is when performers dig a little deeper to find unusual songs or genres to represent. Though it goes without saying, performers need to do anything they can to stand out on these shows.

Fortunately, the singer we’re talking about today did just that.

The performance we’re talking about took place on the 2013 season of Britain’s Got Talent.

It all began with a young woman walking out to the middle of the stage and introducing herself to the judges. She says that her name is Alice Fredenham and that she’s 28 years old.

Although she’s excited for the opportunity to perform, she also says that she’s really nervous! She explains that she has a day job as a beauty therapist, though it’s clear that she’d rather be a full-time singer and performer!

After her introduction, Fredenham is ready to perform.

As she says backstage, Fredenham’s biggest obstacle is that she suffers from pretty extreme stage fright.

Before long, everyone clears the stage so she can sing. The song she’s decided to perform is “My Funny Valentine,” a jazz standard originally performed by child star Mitzi Green.

Since then, it has been performed by artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. While many of the performers on the show tend to perform in a style that fits the times, Fredenham decides that her delivery will be a throwback to an earlier era.

And it’s definitely a big hit with the whole audience!

From the very beginning, it’s clear that Fredenham has a masterful control of her voice and her tone.

She’s able to hit all the notes with ease, but she also brings a theatricality to the performance that has everyone on the edge of their seats. While it starts out relatively quiet and seductive, her performance grows and grows until she’s belting out the last notes! Finally, she winds everything back down and finishes gently once again.

When it’s finally over, the whole crowd gives her a standing ovation!

Although nobody knew quite what to expect when Fredenham got onstage, the soul and emotion in her voice definitely won everybody over.

Before long, it’s time for the judges to give her feedback. First up is judge Simon Cowell, who says that he’s been waiting for a long time for someone like Fredenham to perform. He even describes her voice as “liquid gold”!

Shortly after that, the other judges give their feedback as well—calling it sexy, sultry, mesmerizing and so much more! Even though Fredenham was so shy when she got onstage, the whole crowd and all the judges were completely blown away by her talent!

Needless to say, she gets yeses from all the judges!

Though it goes without saying, Fredenham’s performance shows how important it is to put yourself out there.

Even though she was nervous, Fredenham still got onstage and shared her talents with the world. Once the crowd heard her voice, though, everyone was immediately onboard with her—and the outpouring of emotion even had her in tears! Without a doubt, we’re definitely expecting to see more from her in the future.

Congratulations to Alice Fredenham on her awesome audition! Watch the full thing in the clip below:
