Adam Sanders did not come to play when auditioning for American Idol!
From San Antonio, Texas, Adam auditioned for American Idol during season 12 when he was 19 years old. He made it all the way to the top 50 before being eliminated.
“Being told ‘no’ was heartbreaking, but the truth of the matter, I wasn’t ready.”
It was tough for Adam to be let go so early on in the competition and what came afterward was even harder.
He began to be bullied online after his time on the competition series. People took it upon themselves to attack Adam for his body and who he is as a person.
“After American Idol, I started getting messages every day. People attacked my weigh and sexuality, telling me that I was horrible, that I sucked and didn’t deserve to be here.”
Adam let it get to him in the wrong way and he even contemplated suicide. To avoid the negativity, Adam disappeared from the world for a while.
But he soon realized that disappearing made it worse for him and it did not help him feel any better.
“But through all of the negativity, I have managed to build myself up as a new person. A stronger person. I’ve recreated myself in ways that I could not have imagined.”
After coming to terms with himself, Adam was ready to show American Idol who he is now and is ready to show the world.
For this season 16 audition, Adam decided to introduce the judges to Ada Vox. When he walked in as Ada, Katy Perry immediately applauded him. The judge said:
“Own the room, you better work it out, you better leave it all on the floor, you better wig it!”
Adam works by day at a seafood restaurant and is a professional “part-time woman by night.”
Before the actual singing part of the audition, the judges wanted to get know about Adam and Ada. Katy Perry asked if he’d ever auditioned before and when she found out, Katy then asked if he knew why he’d been let go the first time around.
After Adam explained the previous audition, Katy, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie had to see what Adam had looked like during season 12 of American Idol.
When Luke pulled up the video and photos on his phone, Katy could not stop saying “no way” over and over again.
After getting over their initial shock, Ada finally auditioned with “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals and the judges were beyond impressed. Luke asked what Ada’s range is and he was blown away by the response.
Lionel had to applaud Adam for coming out to the audition as Ada because many contestants will audition but are confused about who they are.
“What I am very happy about is that you are owning your talent. You are owning who you are. We’ve had a lot of artists come on here – talented – but confused. What you’re giving us is a clear understanding of who you are.”
After that audition, it was pretty easy for the judges to make their votes on whether or not Adam would go to Hollywood as Ada Vox.
Luke Bryan was the last to vote and even joked:
“You’ve thrown me a country boy curveball!”
