After you’ve seen all kinds of online reality shows, it all starts to get a little bit rote after a while.
Even if you love shows like American Idol or America’s Got Talent, you start to know what to expect after a while. Although there are plenty of beautiful stories and incredible talents that go through these shows, for the most part these shows are dedicated to powerful singing performances, often in the pop music genre. Regardless, there are still those occasional performances that are unlike anything most of us have ever seen.
And one of those performances happened recently on America’s Got Talent.
The performer in question was Marcin Patrzalek, a Polish guitarist who was only 18 years old.
As he explains in the pre-show interview, he explains that he’s always been interested in experimenting with sound and trying to find weird tones that could hold his attention.
Through that interest, he picked up a guitar and started developing his own experimental style with it. He goes on to say that although he used to be a shy kid, his confidence grew as he learned that he had his own unique musical style and voice.
After all that, everyone in the crowd was excited to see what he would do onstage.
As Patrzalek walks out on stage, he has a huge smile on his face.
He introduces himself to the judges and explains that he is from Poland but will going to college in the United States.
Although he doesn’t sing, he tells them that he’ll be playing guitar on what he thinks is “the best show on Earth.” With no further ado, he’s ready to set into his performance. First, he plugs his acoustic guitar in and gives it a few test strums.
After that, he takes a bow and starts to play.
At the beginning, he starts playing the very recognizable 5th Symphony composed by Beethoven.
Still, he gives the song his own unique twist—although the main chords are recognizable, he incorporates his own hand drumming and ferocious finger-picking style into the performance as well.
The whole thing is a unique blend of Spanish style guitar and German classical composition, all with a ton of energy—and the crowd loves it!
After the first part of the song is over, the crowd gets on their feet for a round of applause.
Still, Patrzalek’s audition isn’t over yet!
In the second part of the song, he starts into a much more modern song called “Toxicity” by Armenian-American metal band System of a Down. Though not everyone has likely heard this song, it was popular in the early 2000s—and Patrzalek absolutely nails all the parts on his acoustic guitar!
Although most of think of acoustic performances as relatively mellow, melodic exercises where we all know what it should sound like, this performance throws all of those conventions out the window. All the judges are clearly blown away and nobody has ever seen anything like it. When he’s finally done, the audience is absolutely roaring with applause.
