Autism is a spectrum disorder with many subtypes. These subtypes, influenced by genetic and environmental factors, result in a distinct set of strengths and struggles for each person diagnosed with the disorder. It refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills and speech and nonverbal communication. Many factors influence the development of autism or ASD. The disorder is often accompanied by medical issues and sensory sensitivities. Usually, signs of autism appear by age 2 but some development delays can appear earlier. Because ASD can be diagnosed as early as 18 months, early intervention is key.
What most people forget is the importance of being properly educated on autism.
Taking the initiative to learn about the disorder will make it easier for one to understand the behaviors of a person with autism and most importantly, help create a safe environment where they can thrive. (Source: AutismSpeaks)
To show you just how amazing the potential of a person with ASD can be, here’s Christopher Duffley.
In 2014, when he was just ten years old, Christopher walked on stage not knowing he would wow the crowd that welcomed him with cheers and loud applause.
The talented young fellow also happens to be blind. He was born prematurely and was rendered blind due to Retinopathy of Prematurity.
You’d think it’s quite difficult to be living with autism and blindness, but Christopher’s confidence and positive temperament will definitely wave off your doubts. You see, he grew up with a love for singing.
In fact Christopher sang before he even held a conversation.
He was only four years old when he discovered what a microphone was.
Evidently surrounded by positive family members and supportive friends, Christopher’s confidence and composure on stage will definitely compel you to sit up a little straighter and eagerly anticipate what he has in store for you.
After being given a brief introduction, the young man was ready to sing.
As the sound of a beautiful melody played on the piano filled the room, Christopher stood patiently, took a deep breath, and began to sing.
“Open the eyes of my heart, Lord… Open the eyes of my heart. I want to see You, I want to see You…”
His voice, strong and clear, resounded through the room.
Christopher knew the words by heart, kept in time with the musical accompaniment, and stood tall, singing his praise.
“To see you high and lifted up
Shining in the light of Your glory
Pour out Your power and love
As we sing holy, holy, holy…”
The impressive talent and confidence of this young man is a quintessential example of the truth behind the saying, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude.”
This particular video went viral (unsurprisingly) and it didn’t take long before Christopher became a YouTube sensation.
He has since recorded two albums, performs at corporate and ministry events, and even creates, interviews, and engineers interviews.
Watch Christopher’s performance and prepare to be captivated by his angelic singing voice.
