Destiny Chukunyere, a 14-year-old girl from Malta, stepped onto the Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) audition stage with a quiet shyness that belied her previous victory at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest two years earlier.
As she stood before the BGT judges, her nerves were palpable, a sentiment she shared with both judge Alesha Dixon and hosts Ant and Dec in her backstage interview.
Alesha Dixon, in an attempt to ease Destiny’s nerves, engaged her in conversation.
The audience learned that Destiny had traveled from Malta to the UK with her grandmother specifically for the BGT audition.
Destiny’s choice of audition song was a fitting tribute to one of her idols: Aretha Franklin’s “Think”.
This announcement was met with a raised eyebrow from Simon Cowell, who acknowledged the song’s challenging nature.
When asked if she felt confident, Destiny responded, “When I start singing, I’m a different person.”
As Destiny began to sing, her transformation was remarkable.
She commanded the stage, delivering a performance that left the judges and audience in awe.
Her powerful voice hit every note, high and low, with precision and emotion.
This was not Destiny’s first foray into the world of talent competitions.
Destiny had a history of participating in singing competitions from a young age.
She had placed third in the Festival Kanzunetta Indipendenza in Malta, won the Asterisks Music Festival in Macedonia, and participated in SanRemo Junior in Italy.
Her most notable achievement was representing Malta in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
Destiny’s performance of “Think” had secured her the opportunity to represent Malta in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
During the contest, she performed “Not My Soul” and emerged as the winner.
This victory bolstered her confidence and led her to audition for Britain’s Got Talent, eager to showcase her talent on a global stage.
Her performance was met with a standing ovation from the entire theater.
The judges were effusive in their praise.
Alesha Dixon declared, “It was a knockout. You’re 14 and you killed it. Brilliant audition.”
David was equally impressed, asking, “What happened to the shy 14-year-old girl from Malta? Where did she go?
You are definitely born to sing.” Simon Cowell, known for his often harsh critiques, was left eating his words after Destiny’s stellar performance.
He admitted, “I’ve been waiting for someone to come out who we think could be a star – and guess who it is? You! You have soul.”
Destiny’s journey on Britain’s Got Talent ended when she was eliminated at sixth place.
However, her musical journey did not stop there.
She has since performed live on various TV and radio shows.
The most significant development in her career came when Michela Pace, Malta’s representative at the 2019 Eurovision Singing Contest, invited her to join her team.
Destiny provided backup vocals for Michela Pace’s performance at the contest in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Her participation was confirmed when her vocals were recognized during the final chorus and she was spotted at the artists’ welcome event for the Eurovision Singing Contest.
This is just one of the many opportunities Destiny has been blessed with due to her incredible talent.
As her journey continues, there’s no doubt that more opportunities will come her way.
