Regardless of the type of event, there has to be that certain someone that steals the show.
Since laughter is always the cure, we’re not surprised when a comedy act, intentional or unintentional, becomes the highlight of the evening.
That was Rebel Wilson’s speech at the 2020 BAFTA Awards—it was a highlight of the night, the most memorable moment, and the only thing everyone kept talking about it.
It is the last big awards show before the Oscars—yes, it’s the BAFTA awards we’re talking about.
As always, Royal Albert Hall in the heart of London was full, bright, and glamorous. Everyone who is someone was there, from Royal family members to the biggest names of Hollywood. As the camera shows the audience, you can see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the front row, which is no surprise since Prince William is the president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Then there is Rebel Wilson, famous for her roles in Pitch Perfect, How to Be Single, Bridesmaids, and Grimsby. Her latest project, the 2019 musical fantasy film Cats, wasn’t such a success. But that information becomes important for the rest of the story, and Rebel uses it quite a few times to wrap up some of her jokes.
We’ve already known that Wilson doesn’t shy away from using any type of bold or provocative jokex to make a point.
As she comes on stage to announce the winner of the BAFTA Award for Best Direction, the instrumental version of “Dance Monkey” plays in the background. Rebel greets everyone by saying “Good evening, distinguished guests.”
Then, she couldn’t remember the name of the Royal Albert Hall, calling it “Royal Andrew,” “Royal Harry,” “Royal Philippe,” and finally just the “Palace Place.” It was a joke, but the Royals didn’t seem impressed by it!
Margot Robbie and Charlize Theron, on the other hand, were already in tears of laughter.
Rebel justified the confusion by saying that she’s just found out that no one’s getting a gift bag, they’ll simply get a gifting wallet. That’s when the “Pitch Perfect” star bravely compared her lady business with the wallet—and all you can hear is roaring laughter in the crowd.
Everything had a much bigger point, and Rebel wanted to address the lack of diversity in the nominations.
Because it’s “all about sustainability,” says Wilson, “I made my red and black dress from two dresses.”
She had to point out that the black dress is from a recent funeral she went to for a movie called Cats—a clear joke about the movie’s failure.
However, what Rebel was trying to emphasize is that there are no felines in the nominations.
The Best Director nominees are all male, and the situation was the same with nominations for the Academy Award. Prince William, afterward, stated that the priority is “to ensure diversity in the awards process.”
According to Wilson, the BAFTA mask is a great way to protect yourself from the coronavirus.
To top it all, Rebel took the BAFTA Award mask, shielded her face with it, and commented that it’s a great way to protect yourself from viruses.
That’s when everyone starts laughing. It was certainly a hilarious, uncommon speech. We surely enjoyed Rebel’s rebellious approach and creativity.
She’s definitely one of the funniest comedians working right now! Check out the full clip below:
