Though shows like American Idol exclusively feature singers, there are a lot of talent competitions that are more open-ended.

When it comes to the Got Talent franchise, anybody from virtually any age group or background is good to perform. Beyond that, they also can do any talent that they want to.

Needless to say, that makes for some interesting auditions! Even if we mostly think of the American versions of these shows when we discuss them, most of them actually started in Britain.

At the very least, Britain has their own versions of all the same shows.

The performance we’re talking about today took place on the 2017 season of Britain’s Got Talent.

Before it started, the contestant spoke backstage to the hosts to get some encouragement before walking out to face the judges. After a moment, he introduced himself as Ned Woodman—and he’s only eight years old.

As he explains, he’s there with his whole family and he’s used to performing for his entire class. Before he appeared onstage, he would practice with hairbrushes and other household objects as microphones.

Finally, the judges clear the way for him to perform—though it’s still unclear what exactly he’ll be doing.

As soon as he gets started, it’s clear that he’s going to be telling jokes to the audience.

Still, nobody expects the jokes that Woodman is interested in telling. “Why is everyone so excited about that talking dog on Britain’s Got Talent?” he asks the audience. “Amanda Holden has been on the show for years!”

From his very first punchline, the crowd roars with applause—after all, it’s a pretty shocking joke to hear from an eight year old.

For his part, judge Simon Cowell gets up and applauds the first joke with a huge smile on his face.

After that, he goes after the two hosts of the show just as strongly—and this time, judge David Walliams gets up and claps!

Although nobody expected him to do a roast routine, he just keeps going and going, laying into every single one of the cast and crew members.

What’s most impressive of all is that he manages to keep a completely straight, deadpan face the entire time he’s performing. Even though he’s a little boy, he has so much poise!

After landing so many perfect jokes in a row, Woodman takes a bow and the crowd gives him a huge round of applause.

When it’s all over, the judges give him some feedback—and it turns out to be surprisingly positive!

Everybody gives him plenty of positive comments, complimenting his timing and his secret cheekiness. When it’s all over, the judges take a vote. Although he already got an initial “no” from Amanda, he ends up getting all four yeses that he’s looking for!

Even if the jokes were a little on the savage side, everybody knew it was all in good fun—and everybody was just plain impressed by how confident and composed he was. If he keeps this up, he’s sure to have a very successful career in stand-up comedy ahead of him.

Congratulations to Ned Woodman on an awesomely edgy performance! Be sure to watch the entire thing in the clip below:
