A new cover of a popular hymnal viewed and enjoyed by…
Amazing Grace is without a doubt one of the most recognizable hymns in the United States. Regardless of religious affiliation, it is recognizable and offers listeners a peaceful and hopeful feeling that’s been covered by musical artists across the world. But 58 million hymnal fans were still floored by this version, sung by BYU Noteworthy.
A single woman enters to start things off
The video opens with a single woman entering the scene. She wears a soft and modest white dress and slowly walks through a forest. It’s a bright crisp day and her smile is wide and encouraging. She starts to sing with the familiar first lyrics of the song.
More women join the song but are nowhere to be seen
But it’s not long before other voices come in to join her. We don’t see the singers just yet, but there’s an appropriate build up as the woman on stage wanders through the woods.
You almost expect her to turn the corner to see the rest of the chorus, or for the back-up singers to appear when a tree in the foreground blocks the shot. But they never do.
Our singer discovers the chorus and welcomes them to join her
When the singer reaches a calm body of water, she kneels down to cup it in her hand. When she rises, you can see a group of other women waiting a short distance away. Their voices carry the power of Amazing Grace while their similarly pure-white dresses accent the serenity that the pristine woods offer.
The singer turns and motions for the women to follow her. She then turns and walks into the water as the other women come and join her. Each one moving in slow careful steps.
Singing in the water in a baptism inspired scene
In one of the most enchanting segments, the women line up in the water to sing the chorus lines. The camera pans showing us every face. Each singer croons their lyrics in perfect harmony.
This segment also focuses on harmony and community, with warm scenes of hand-holding as the women guide one another through the small ankle length body of water. This might be a sight you see during the age of biblical revivals, with massive groups of men and women performing baptisms in nearby lakes while celebrating the beauty of life.
Fans love the cinematography, especially when…
But don’t miss out on the incredible cinematography work at play here. One shot shows the women, arranged in a V. Look how the trees in the background look like they are providing back up to these incredible singers, and how it narrows and focuses the light shining down on them.
From day to night, the shots become even lovelier
But the most stunning shots are towards the end of the video. It’s now night time and you can see the women lighting candles hinting at what’s to come next.
And sure enough, the women sing the final lyrics of Amazing Grace. They’re still in the water, but this time candles and lanterns provide the lighting. It gives the entire scene a lovely summer feel that provides the perfect ending to a wonderful performance.
To date, this performance has been viewed by millions and have garnered over 38,000 likes on YouTube and it’s easy to see why. What started with one woman traveling through the woods became something so much more.
