BYU Vocal Point is a nine-member, male a cappella group that was formed at Brigham Young University.
The group has performed their own version of a whole host of timeless classics, including Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up” and The Lion King’s “The Circle Of Life”.
One of the most popular videos of all time is the band’s rendition of Audrey Assad’s “It Is Well With My Soul”.
The video was posted to the group’s YouTube channel in February 2017.
The hymn was written by Horatio Spafford in 1893. Spafford had seen huge success as an attorney and real estate investor – but then he unexpectedly lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. It was at this time that his cherished four-year-old son died of scarlet fever.
Spafford decided that the best thing to do for his family was to take a much-needed vacation, so he arranged for his wife and daughters to take a ship to England – but tragedy struck again when the boat was involved in a terrible collision at sea. Only Spafford’s wife survived the ordeal.
Upon hearing the news, Spafford wasted no time in traveling to England.
The captain of his ship knew of his loss, and stopped the boat at one point to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had taken place.
As Spafford’s mind turned to his lost children, he was filled with a surge of hope and comfort. He wrote his thoughts down, not knowing at the time that he was writing a hymn that would linger in the hearts of many for years to come.
More than 100 years later, BYU Vocal Point brought a beautiful rendition of Spafford’s song, with many people agreeing it is the best they’ve ever heard.
Their portrayal of “All Is Well” has been viewed almost 8 million times. Listening to the song truly does bring feelings of peace, comfort, and optimism.
The song begins with a single member of the group singing the opening lyrics:
“When peace like a river, attendeth my way”
He’s then joined by the harmonies of fellow band members for the continued verses:
“When sorrows like sea billows roll—
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to know
It is well, it is well with my soul.”
The band performs the song in perfect grace and harmony. The choral performance is goosebumps-inducing, and no song could be more appropriate to listen to in these current times of uncertainty.
Many people have taken to the comments of BYU Vocal Point’s video to share stories of their own Christian faith in times of hardship.
One person wrote:
“After a year and a half of trying to conceive with my Husband, I became pregnant. We were so over joyed and prayed “your will be done Lord.”. Soon after, I found out I miscarried. I cried and called out to God and said “It is well with my soul.”. No matter what struggle we are going through never forget that God’s will is just and good. I praise the Lord even in my sorrows. And I thank Jesus for giving me even just one moment to be the Mommy to a beautiful soul. I love my sweet baby in Heaven and can’t wait to meet him or her someday. Psalm 18:2 has given me such peace!
Edit Praise Report: I’m 19 weeks pregnant with our beautiful little boy. God is Faithful on every promise! Please never give up hope.”
“It Is Well With My Soul” is a reminder that, while we can’t always say that everything is well in all aspects of our lives, having faith in a loving God and trusting his support, no matter what, we can confidently say that all is well.
