It all started when Ed Sheeran announced that he would be needing a team of local dancers to star in his music video. But not just any dancer. Sheeran wanted a team of dancers who can perform a “proper ceili”. Since the announcement, Irish dancers from all over the world were lining up for this unorthodox audition.

The music video in question is ‘Galway Girl’ starring Academy-nominated Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, where she plays as the titular character, leading Ed into an adventure in the Irish heartland.

And who can best play the role of the local dancers? A group of eight traditional Irish Dancers from Galway, of course!

These eight girls from the Hession School of Irish Dance showed the world what it takes to make it into Ed Sheeran’s music video.

Their “audition dance” happened in the Claddagh, a scenic stage, just by to coast of the Irish Atlantic, for their exhilarating performance.

The performance opens with a couple of false starts, bleeped cuts, and some laughter, making them much more endearing to the audience. After finally getting their introduction right, the video shows a series of picturesque scenes from Claddagh, before the girls made the first steps of their brilliant performance.

They might have started with a few mistakes in their introduction, but as soon as their feet tapped onto the ground, their bodies moved in synchronized clockwork.

They performed in the tune of Sheeran’s more iconic hits, “Shape of You”.

We can’t believe that you can dance a traditional Irish dance with a pop song but these girls are certainly making it happen.

Each step was perfectly timed, and each beat was in perfect tempo.

They transition to “A Lovely Madness” by Beoga, an Irish folk band who was also featured in Sheeran’s upcoming song. Their lively jig and precise tapping molded into Beoga’s traditional Irish tune, and it really shows the beauty of Irish culture.

These girls might make it look easy, but if you watch how they even make the most minuscule of taps, you know how much these girls practiced their craft.

Doing it correctly to the beat is one thing, but doing it correctly and in time with the rest of the troupe is an entirely different thing.

Was their performance enough? Let’s just say that they bumped into Saoirse Ronan as she and Ed were running through the streets of Galway. They got some of their photos signed with Sheeran writing a note and an autograph on the cast of one of the girls.

They even get to dance their part in the video with the actress before they all ran with them through the streets.
