While many adults lose their love of dance, most of us can still think back to a time where we danced like no-one was watching – even when plenty of people were watching.
Even better if you were lucky enough to be involved in a “proper” dance group as a kid, and got to perform in front of huge audiences from time to time.
Five-year-old Roxy Brennan lives the little-kid dancer’s dream, and strutted her stuff in a recent competition.
Roxy isn’t just your average five-year-old. When she gets on stage, she doesn’t jump about semi-aimlessly with a big grin on her face. She’s seriously good.
She proved herself in the 2019 Baltimore Kids Artistic Revue Dance Competition, performing an incredible routine to “Maniac” from the movie Flashdance.
Most of us have watched the classic movie, which stars Jennifer Beals and features a nightclub dancer who aspires to become a professional ballerina. It was produced way back in 1983, but is still much-loved today.
Many songs in Flashdance are world-renowned, including, of course, “Maniac”.
This tune is one of the highest-grossing songs for a film ever written, so little Roxy had some big boots to fill when she stepped out on stage to such an impressive backing track!
From the very beginning of her routine, the tiny dancer is full-energy. She’s clearly a very advanced dancer for her age – but she performs with her face, too, proving that she knows what the song means and giving it justice.
Roxy’s moves are incredibly complex for any dancer, but she pulls them off with perfect grace.
Most five-year-olds have the energy to perform this dance over and over, but they’d never master spins and splits like Roxy can.
Her performance is certainly a testament to her future dancing skills, and she proved she’s one to watch in the industry.
Roxy has that all-important stage presence, demonstrating that she’s not only a good dancer – she also has what it takes to captivate an audience from start to finish.
Between her twists, splits and spins, Roxy’s dancing gets the audience cheering in no time.
It’s hard to believe her young age as she prances around the stage, looking like a seasoned professional dancer with some of her moves – and she stays strong right up until the end of her performance.
Her final pose, sitting on the floor with her arm in the air, head facing the ceiling, had the crowd giving her what was likely the loudest applause of the night.
Unsurprisingly, this talented little dancer ended up as the winner in her category!
Children’s dance competitions sometimes get some stick, but it’s clear that Roxy, with her talent, and most importantly, confidence, must have a very supportive mother and father behind her.
When kids can perform this well, it’s usually because they have someone who seriously believes in what they do – and competitions such as these can be helpful in teaching kids life lessons from a young age.
Roxy isn’t only talented – it’s also clear that she loves what she does and knows how good she is.
