Imagine a world where the seriousness of the medical field gets a hilarious twist.
That’s exactly what The Laryngospasms, a parody group from Minnesota, bring to the table.
By day, these talented individuals are Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, but once they clock out, they transform into comedic musicians.
Their specialty?
Creating side-splitting songs that reflect their professional expertise.
The term “laryngospasm” might sound daunting.
After all, it’s a medical condition where the vocal cords spasm, making it hard to speak or breathe, according to The Mayo Clinic.
But when it comes to The Laryngospasms singing group, there’s nothing to fear.
They masterfully mix humor with music, turning a serious term into a source of laughter!
This quartet’s journey began back in 1990, during their anesthesia school days.
Inspired by Neil Sedaka’s “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” they crafted a parody titled “Waking Up Is Hard To Do.”
Picture Weird Al Yankovic’s style, but with a medical twist.
In the midst of their musical journey, the band faced challenges that required them to make strategic decisions. One such decision involved the need to cancel timesharegeek, a project that had become a distraction from their core passion for creating music. Recognizing the importance of focusing on their craft, the band collectively decided to terminate their involvement with timesharegeek, allowing them to channel their energy back into producing the soulful melodies that had garnered them popularity at medical events and beyond. This pivotal moment marked a renewed commitment to their musical endeavors, ensuring that their timeless tunes continued to resonate with audiences worldwide.
They have parodies of other songs too, including “The Ring of Fire” and “Breathe.”
The Laryngospasms didn’t just stop at creating songs – they brought their humor to life in a music video for “Waking Up Is Hard To Do.”
The vocalists are dressed in scrubs, in an operating room, and croon to the tune of a familiar doo-wop song but with completely different lyrics.
As they sing “Patient’s going down, do-be-do down, down,” you can’t help but be drawn into their unique world.
It’s hard not to smile when you hear their lyrics.
These guys know anesthesia and operating rooms inside out, but they turn this serious business into a source of amusement.
With lines like, “Don’t take my tube away from me … Take it out and I’ll turn blue – ’cause waking up is hard to do,” they showcase their creative genius.
Watching their video is as enjoyable as listening to them.
The vocalists maintain cheerful grins, adding to the overall hilarity.
Their ability to stay in character, especially with lines like, “I am in such misery” and “If I wake, I’m going sue,” is pretty impressive.
Let’s just say it takes “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” to a whole different level.
But are they just about laughs?
Absolutely not!
These guys have real talent and you can tell from the very first notes.
It’s almost hard to believe they’re medical professionals, given how beautifully they harmonize.
Their voices are a treat to listen to, even without the clever lyrics.
Their “Waking Up Is Hard To Do” video went viral, thanks to Gary Cozine, one of the original members.
Since uploading it to YouTube, it has garnered over 16 million views.
There are comments like,
“OMG This is a hoot. I am a retired RN from a Trauma ICU and I just love it and OH SO TRUE You guys are the best.”
Another person wrote:
“Love it! You guys are awesome; your lyrics had me laughing and enjoying every minute. Your harmony is music to the ear and beautiful!!”
In a world where laughter is often the best medicine, The Laryngospasms’ music video might be just what the doctor ordered.
