The Git Up Challenge is the 2019 trend that seems to be following us right into the next decade – whether we like it or not.
While most of the thousands of challenge videos were posted last year on both Tik Tok and YouTube, they’re still being watched by millions and shared throughout social media.
If you’ve haven’t been introduced to the latest dance craze, it’s based on the song “The Git Up,” by country-rap artist Blanco Brown.
The actual “challenge”? To do a coordinated dance described in the lyrics to the song.
For example:
“Go’n and do the two-step, then cowboy boogie // Grab your sweetheart and spin out with ’em // Do the hoedown and get into it // Take it to the left now and dip with it // Go’n throw down, take a sip with it // Now lean back, put your hips in it // Let’s have some fun.”
Does that make absolutely no sense to you? That’s ok. Blanco Brown released a video to show everyone the steps:
It’s pretty easy, which is why so many people have confidently uploaded videos of themselves doing it. We’ve seen solo performances from dancers of all ages, dozens of daddy/daughter performances (no doubt inspired by the lyrics “Grab your sweetheart”), as well as doctors, nurses, and dozens of first responders taking part, many of whom challenge their local rivals to post videos as well.
The song is fun-loving and there are no risque lyrics nor are there any “sexy” dance moves, so the whole thing truly is family-friendly.
It’s even become a new wedding dance (farewell, for now, Electric Slide!), so it’s no wonder people want to learn the steps.
And the Rockin’ Horse Dance Barn in Renton, Washington wants to help. Their video shows people of all ages working their way through the steps – and people love to use it as an instructional video.
It begins with a man in a cowboy hat walking out onto a floor full of dancers, giving the front row high-fives. This is supposed to be fun, after all, so getting people in the right frame of mind is important.
Once they start it’s clear that there have been some dance classes involved here – they’re great! And what a fun way to get some exercise as well!
What’s nice about this particular video is that it shows that you can do the dance no matter what your age. If we had to guess, we’d say most of the dancers range in age from their 30s to their 60s. It looks like an inviting place to learn some new moves without feeling intimidated by other dancers.
These folks are pretty smooth – they certainly aren’t going to be intimidated when “The Git Up” comes on at the next family wedding. They may not have added too much of their own special flair to it yet, but that comes later, after you’ve learned the basic steps (and maybe had a few drinks).
Now, if seeing a group perform the dance makes it too confusing, and instructor from the Rockin’ Horse Dance Barn has also posted a video with the steps broken down one by one.
So if you’re rhythm challenged or just have a hard time putting it all together, then you’ll want to start there.
But in the meantime, be sure to scroll down and watch this group get down to “The Git Up.”
