When you were young, did you play any instruments?
For some readers out there, memories of music lessons in childhood may have been difficult or tedious. Even though playing instruments can add a lot of joy to one’s life, let’s face it: children have short attention spans. Trying to get a little kid to sight read music, practice diligently and perform in front of others can be a real challenge. Still, maybe some of us out there turned musical ability into a lifelong passion. The rest of us are jealous. In any case, sometimes music comes more easily to some of us than to others.
That seems to be the case in one video which has recently swept the internet.
The clip shows an adorable little girl named Charlotte.
It begins with Charlotte waving adorably to the camera. Her mom is behind the camera and speaks to her. “I want to hear you play a song. Can you play a song for me please?” she asks. After a little convincing, Charlotte agrees to play a song on the piano for her mother. After a moment of preparation, Charlotte starts to play.
What comes out is far beyond what anyone would expect.
Even though Charlotte is so young, she plays piano at a 5th-grade level.
The song that comes out is Allegretto in F by Bach. Although the music itself is played well, Charlotte’s attitude makes the entire thing come to life even more. As she hits the notes, Charlotte hums the melody under her breath and raises her voice at the parts she seems to find the most exciting. Through it all, it’s obvious that the song is not much of a challenge for her advanced piano chops.
After the song is over, Charlotte gives her mom a high-five (and wins the hearts of viewers everywhere).
The clip of Charlotte has already garnered more than six million views on YouTube.
Still, Charlotte’s performance seems to be part of a growing niche of child musical prodigies on YouTube (don’t ask me how I know that). Although it’s always incredible to see someone so young have such incredible skill, this video is also adorable in its smaller details. The way Charlotte interacts with her mom is enough to melt anyone’s hard—and Charlotte’s attitude throughout takes the whole thing up a level.
If Charlotte ends up sticking with piano, the world had better watch out!
